Race day. I'm not at all confident about this race but I've signed up and I want to do it. I'm in approximately the same shape as I was in April for the other 25k. It's fine. It's warm. Mid 70's by 8:00 am.

The whistle blows and we start. Slowly as it takes me twenty seconds or more to cross the start line and that's where I start my watch. Mile one comes and it feels easy at 9:30. Faster than I planned but comfortable and I know I need to just take things as they come for this. I will. Mile two is 18:10 which is faster yet. That doesn't seem quite right. Mile three at 27 something and I'm in a good range though my legs just hit the first sign of fatigue. I get some powerade and water at the aid stop. The water is warm. It will continue to be warm all race.

By six miles I found the rhythm that I think will take me through this. I'm sitting at a 55 minute 6 mile and a 57 minute 10k. Over the next six miles I will essentially hold this pace. If a 10 minute pace is 1:30 for nine miles I'll be between 1:23 and 1:25. I started slipping a little faster each mile until 12 miles when my pace started going the other way. Mile thirteen was tiring, but I'm still going and still ahead of my target. Mile fourteen was hard. I'm hungry and have to work to do whatever it is that I'm doing. Mile fifteen was even harder.

It's funny, at the marathon I didn't even start feeling pain or discomfort until after 16 miles. Well, this isn't the marathon. It's also hotter. Still fairly scenic as we do two laps around the two lakes and the final portion to finish back at Lake Harriet.

Okay, half mile left. At mile twelve I thought I'd have a decent kick at the end. I felt semi-strong and that I might be holding back. By mile fourteen I proved the lie and realized I wasn't holding anything back. I was done.

Half mile left. Go uphill for the third time between lakes Calhoun and Harriet and head to the right and see the finish. See my father and my sister cheer me on a little and hear the announcer say my name. Cross the line and stop my watch and hear the woman counting the time say 31:60. Think I might have misheard her because that would be 32 unless I'm suffering from heat stroke.

I'm done. Phew. This was harder than I expected, but I went faster than expected.

My watch says 2:31:29

Official time is 2:32:01

Official pace: 9:47!!

Whee!!!!!

333/458 gender
29/38 AG
467/724 Overall

You know, they made a big deal about how the race directors expanded the field from 1000 to 2500. There were still people registering at the race and it didn't look like 2500. Now I know why.

In place of a race t-shirt I received a glass mug. That's a nice change.

P.S.: Jrjo was not able to make this race. I had hoped he would/could, but due to soreness he told me a couple weeks ago he'd have to scratch. There goes my first Riff Raff meet.

The shocker in all this was the P.S. - you have yet to meet any Riff Raff?

Races are always tougher when ther's heat and/or humidity. You showed a lot of tenacity, and that will reap dividends down the road. Nice race. Cool

Well, I've met my wife (obviously) and she joined Riff Raff. Razz

The official results give the temperature range at 75-85, sunny and muggy.

Son, I'm going to give you the same bit of advice that my mother gave me when I was a mere tot, and she was bouncing me on her knee:

Well, not where Jrjo lives. I believe he is above the arctic circle.

Nice racing Pug!! I hate race courses that are two loops - nice way to hang on and finish strong on a hot day!

thumbs up Ya done did gooood!

I fergot to tell ya, that race always seems to be hot Surprised I was even further south for a 15k on the same day...that was far enough. Enjoy the mug, it's probably the last one with this race being slated for 'execution'. thanks to the City of Minneapolis

I was thinking about the execution...there is one road and one lane that the city really needed to work to close off (the road between the two lakes and then one lane of Lake Street). All side streets around the lake just requite a few traffic cones or a sawhorse. I can't believe this really costs Minneapolis that much money to do.
