Posted: 03/17/04 - 09:30 Post subject: Question about the war in Iraq & Al-Qaeda
Boortz linked an opinion column about Al-Qaeda and the war with Iraq. I won't bother linking it because it is from conservative source that many of you probably won't bother to read anyway.
The article raised a very interesting question for those who oppose the war with Iraq -- If there is no link between Al-Qaeda and Iraq, then why did Al-Qaeda blow up those trains in Madrid?
I'm honestly curious. For those that think this war is not justified, how do you explain this quandry?
P.S. I fear that something similar may happen on American soil prior to our Nov. election.

Maybe because Spain is very close geographically to the Arab world. Also, the Arabs were thrown out of Spain toward the end of the 15th century, and Al-Qaeda is PO'd over that. Those who want to spread Islam by force do remember things like that from history, just like everyone.
Again, it could be that they see a rising anti-Arab, anti-Islam trendin European countries. I don't think it's as pronounced in Spain as in France, or especially Gemany, but then (as I mentioned at the start) Spain is easy to get to from North Africa. Especially Morocco (where several of the bombers are from).
Or, Al-Qaeda's just PO'd that a country (-ies) from the Christian West invaded an Arab country ("How dare they call their plan 'Infinite Justice'! No one should disparage any religion! I know what will teach them a lesson... JIHAD!").

Someone watches The Daily Show with Jon Stewart...
Good question, though, sonny. Looking forward to reading the responses!

The 25 million Iraqi's who have a better life I bet think the war was justified.
No arguement from me. Yeah the USSS will be busy in the upcoming months. Also there is that Olympic thing this summer. Many some juicy targets coming up.

They didn't want to seem like they were just picking on the U.S., when there are so many other Western countries who probably aren't so well prepared, and easier to get to.
I don't think a terrorist organization needs a rational reason to operate.

Applying rational thoughts and processes to irrational organizations/situations is futile.

And I guess the new constitution, elections and commerce do not count. These things take time.
You probably would have wanted the U.S. to pull out of WWII because DDay had 6K plus deaths and things were not looking good for a few weeks.

So you think its a mere coincendence that this happens a mere 2 days prior to a national election in Spain?

They're like, Muslim extremists and stuff.
They think the Western way of life is an offense to God.
Any Western country could be attacked. (France, too)

In one of his recent message played on al-Jazeera ("Must See TV"), Osama singled out France for their plan to ban any religious dress in schools. This would include crosses, yarmulkes (I would assume), and the shrouds Muslim women wear. Why Spain, then, and not France? France does have a sizable Muslim population.

No, but, i think it has less to do with your statement in bold where you say "if there is no link between Al-Qaeda and Iraq, then why did Al-Qaeda blow up those trains in Madrid". The link (or a lack of a link) was supposed to have been between the Iraqi government and Al-Qaeda. The report is that there is no link. The terrorists may still have interest in Iraq, but not that of the official government.
