Since we didn't give gifts to Joshua's general friend population for Christmas I wanted to do something for them for Valentine's day. We have already made cards for them but I wanted to do something a little more. I was thinking along the lines of something easy and quick since there are about 30 kids I have to do this for.

I was thinking I might make some sugar cookies shaped like hearts and wrap them up to look all pretty (since most of these 30 friends are GIRLS!). Cupcakes are an option but take longer to make (and are more messy) than sugar cookies. I also thought about the really quick task of putting some conversation hearts in a clear wrap and then tie the card onto them.

Suggestions? Good sugar cookie recipes?

When David was in grade school I found this idea in a magazine and did it for his class Valentines. It's kind of hard to describe, but I'll try:

First, take a piece of red construction paper and cut it into a heart shape.
Then, take a piece of clear vinyl (I bought it at WalMart in the craft section) and cut that into a heart shape.

Put the heart shapes together and punch holes all around the edges.

Take a red ribbon or yarn and lace the two pieces together, leaving room at the top to fill the inside with candy ( I used heart shaped nerds, you could also use conversation hearts), then tie the ribbon into a bow at the top.
They were really cute, and gave David some valuable sewing experience.

I also made these cookies:
"Say-You'll-Be-Mine Chocolate Hearts"
3/4 c. margarine
3/4 c. sugar
1 egg
1 t. vanilla
1 2/3 c. flour
6 T cocoa
1 t. baking powder
1/4 t. salt
Canned white frosting
Tubes of red icing
Red and pink sprinkles

1. Cream butter and sugar. Add egg and vanilla
2. Combine dry ingredients. Gradually add to butter mixture. Shape dough into ball, cover with plastic wrap, refrigerate at least 1 hour.
3. Roll out 1/4 of dough to 1/8" thickness on lightly floured surface. Cut dough into cookies using 2 1/2 " heart shaped cutters. Place 1/2" apart on greased baking sheets.
4. Bake 6 minutes at 350 degrees Cool on wire racks.
5. To sandwich cookies together, use canned frosting (tinted with red food coloring if desired). Decorate with frosting, icing and sprinkles.
Makes approximately 8 dozen.
