I just received a voicemail from Dave.
The jist:
'I respect that you respect your friends privacy'
'I didn't get into this business just for the money, I know how important life insurance is' (he is a cancer survivor, more on that later)
'Please call me so that I can explain to you my way of thinking'
On the Cancer survivor thing. When we were in our early twenties, he was diagnosed with t-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma (I will never forget). I happened to be between jobs at the time, so I visited him at the hospital 3 days a week for about 3 months. He has been in remission for almost 8 years (I guess that would be called cancer free).
He just doesn't get it.

Here's a reply...
Dave,
Sniff, sniff. Does it smell like a burning bridge to you?
-Phil
seriously though...
Maybe something along the lines of "our friendship wasn't built on business and for me, it's better that way".

Just say you are not comfortable disclosing that kind of info. for these purposes. Period.
But I think what you got back was a type of form letter the insurance company supplies their agents just for people who are uncomfortable providing referrals. The "even if they really need it" was just to subtle a jab.
I think what's happeing is your friend the insurance agent isn't cutting it and is under some big time pressure to either deliver or turn the chair over to someone who can.

I can spot a form letter a mile away. I reread what he sent you, and no doubt about it--he filled in the blanks. That would piss me off more than asking to get my buddies contact info.
Sorry to say it, but your pal here is not only pushy but desperate to sell policies. I mean, who says "as your friend and life insurance agent?"
