Hear Ye, Hear Ye
Come one, come all to the 2003 Pump Up Riff Raff Championship. In the spirit of last year's pre-holiday season mustache contest, I invite you to join this year's attempt to help you look better as you sit down to dine your Thanksgiving dinner. For 90-days, the challenge is set to flex your pecs and try to win the title of PURR Champion. Starting next week, the odessey to add some strength and sculpting to these unproportional runner bodies of ours begins.
There will be two divisions in PURR, Womens and Mens. And there will be two events to earn points before the final championship crowning at Thanksgiving time. The two events are Pecs Specs and Pecs Pics. You can participate in either one, but to accumulate enough points for getting the championship crown will take participation in both.
To earn points in Pecs Specs, there are 4 ways.
1) Pushups... during the next week, make an attempt to do as many as you can. The womans division will be doing 'bent knee' pushups while the mens division will do the classical toes stance. Log that number somewhere (this is all virtual and on your honor, so we'll trust you keep accurate records for the whole contest). Then come Thanksgiving week, you'll make the same attempt again. For each pushup improvement you make, there will be 2-points given. Caveat...if you include pushups as a regular part of your training already (at least twice a week, since 1/1/03), you will earn 3-points per pushup improved.
2) Benchpress... again, during the next week, find out what your max benchpress is. Of course, we encourage safety, so have a spotter with you to do this. Log that number somewhere. Then come Thanksgiving week, you'll try again. For each pound of improvment you make, there will be 1-point given. Caveat...if you include benchpressing as a regular part of your training already, you will earn 2-points per pound improved.
3) Measurement... take the current circumference of your chest (fla will post the precise way to do this). Improvements over the 90-day contest will be awarded as 20-points per inch, with fractional points given. Granted, few of us want to "bulk" up this might seem counterproductive, but I think we can all admit, being runners with legs of steel, our chests could use a definite pump up
4) Absolute max... In both the Womens and Mens division, points will be awarded for the 1st, 2nd, & 3rd places in the most pushups and benchpress. Those awards will be 10, 8 and 6 points respectively. Before anyone claims unfair...all I can say is I've seen pictures and read descriptions on nearly all of us... no one's got an advantage here
To earn points in Pecs Pics you will need to arm yourself with a camera. Of course a digital will make life easier, but there will be enough time built in here to use a regular 35mm and check that cd box when you get it developed so you can post it.
1) Pick the pec contest! This will happen at Thanksgiving to show off the 90-days of training you've put in. Faces will be cropped out of the pics and the fubbiness of trying to match the pec pic to the riff-raffer will be the highlight of Pecs Pics. Simply participating in Pick the Pec earns you 50-points. Clothed, unclothed, flexed, flabby or faded...you choose your pose.
2) Most improved Pecs. This will happen after the Pick the Pec since some of you will use your improved pic in the Pick the Pec fubbiness. Before and After pics will be needed for this one. So take a current pic, save in on your computer somewhere and then take another in late November for comparing. An official PURR Poll will be done and voting will determine the points. 30 for 1st place, 20 for 2nd place, and 10 for 3rd place. Both Womens and Mens division 1st thru 3rd will earn the points.
PURR Championship
Once all the results of Pecs Specs and Pecs Pics are in, the ultimate title of PURR Champion will be crowned on the Woman and Man who accumulated the most points. Simple, no?
So start flexing. Start pumping. And get ready to loook mahvelous!!!!

To encourage those of you contemplating joining the Pecs Specs part of the challenge and are thinking "there is no way on God's green earth I'm going to tell anyone my stats!", well take heart. You CAN score yourself and report the points in for a final standing. Go ahead with the events and keep track on your own (again, it's all virtual anyway, so we trust ya), then come Thanksgiving week, I'll put up a post on calculating the points. If we get enough 'self-scorers', we can change the Absolute Max category to be a sliding range of points instead of comparing to everyone here. Sound like a plan?! Good. Now get your specs recorded and let's LIFT

i must have it.
lol. um, how do you calculate your max bench? i don't even have a normal bench press, just a machine that's vertical...
this will coincide nicely with my free gym use at school, where i hope to abuse the chinup bar and bench press. oh, and when is the yankee turkey day? just so i can adjust my calender.

Hey this is a family site!
Your pec pics presentation will be all on your own. Get into the fubbiness however you'd like. And if you only want to participate in Pecs Specs... go for it!

Turkey Day is Nov.27th. And as for the bench, I'm thinkin' the vertical stack on your machine should be fine, there's pounds/kilos labeled on there, no? Any expert lifter opinions out there?

yeah it's marked every 10lbs. heheh it probably won't be exact but i'll see what i can do.

Get someone to help you with this measurement:
Have that person stand behind you with the tape measure in his/her hands.
He/she places the tape measure around your body.
YOU place the tape measure at the level of your nipples.
You take a deep breath and then relax and slowly exhale.
He/she pulls the tape measure together in the back and records the measurement.
Make sure he/she doesn't pull too tight or too lax on the tape measure.
