This is reason no. 112 on the list of Why I Homeschool.

You're a better mom than I. I couldn't homeschool my kids for anything. I taught Libby how to write her letters before Kindergarten and I'm surprised either of us survived that. I don't have the patience to teach children.

You take that back! I'm a DIFFERENT mom than you, and I have the time and the desire to do the homeschooling. You're a terrific mom, but I don't have to tell you that.

Aye, there's the rub. Though this is hardly restricted to the at need communities. I know plenty of two income households where the kids are either latchkey or are in afterschool programs because Mom and Dad are off working and can't parent them until say 6, 7pm. Character building aside, a parent is a child's first teacher. A parent should not expect someone else to do their job in terms of childrearing, discipline, and teaching them manners. A school is an institution of academia, yet it has also become a parental substitute. Sorry, if you can't teach your child how to act around and speak with others, how to conduct themselves in a respectful manner, and work with them to better their education, you have no right being a parent. You create a child, you are responsible to and for him/her - plain and simple.

I do my "best" to teach my child how to act. However, I am "not" an expert and some children "do" need help in this area. Not every child on earth is born without defects. There are children in this world that have no social skills, whatsover, and it isn't because of their parents not "trying" to teach them. I'm happy to have a teacher that recognizes that fact. Some of these children are as bright, if not brighter than "normal" children, they aren't disruptive, they just have no social skills.

brie k-
your right, reading comprehension, and all the the other subjects public school students are tested on is important, since it would help educators
figure out what they are doing wrong, and come up with ways of solving the problem.
i was looking at it more from viewpioint, though, and what would suit me....
but i'm not the only one (as i've been told before Very Happy )
so, yes, you are right...
oh, and good for your son! it's good that he can read well- it's a very important in today's world

a bit off subject.......
also, as i have found out, the student will only learn as much as he/she wants to. educators do play a big role in motavating the student, but the test tell what the teachers need to concentrate more on teaching the students.
so, the teachers can teach all they want, but if the students are unwilling to learn, then they aren't going to. I don't understant why teachers don't focus more on the importance of studying and fully understanding the materal. That way, students can learn how they will use the knowledge later in life. I don't like to admit it, but if i consider something being taught pointless, i'll put a lot less effort in it, even though points add up to
to determine placement in the future.
i have to say, though, teachers should focus more on complete understand than scraping a passing grade in class...or doing good
on the standard test....if they focus on that then high scores will come automatically
