I saw a special last night--I could only watch a few minutes of this special, it was so heartwrenching.
It was about a little boy. 8 years old. In Colombia.
They lived in a shantytown. He convinced all his playmates that they needed to take care of the elderly in their town. All the elderly that had literally been thrown out in the streets to fend for themselves. With God knows what pains and illnesses to live out the rest of their days in the gutters. Had it not been for this child and his friends.
Due to his efforts, other countries have sent money and they built a home with beds and doctors and food. It is still highly impoverished, but one child made a difference. He is now 20 and his goal was to become a doctor. The show was too danged painful to watch for me to know if he made his goal.
If anyone deserved sainthood, it is this young man.
What tore me up the most: He had to stop a very old lady from eating cigarrette butts because she was so hungry and had nothing else.
That will haunt me for a long, long time. These are my people.

It should haunt us all - they are everybody's people.

You're right, but I feel especially responsible.

what motivates an 8 yr. old to do something like this? destiny? just incredible to me that a kid would have such humility and compassion for his fellow (older generation) humankind.
you wanna think someone like that is just destined for greatness, really. i mean if not him...WHO???

No kidding. At first I was like, "If I would ever doubt there is a God..." and my husband said, "That kid being there and doing that should help prove there is a God..." He's right.
