A little backstory. I was hoping this spring to run the half marathon this day. However, with my wife's work schedule causing her to be gone at least 3 weeks for different trainings, and my crazy basketball camp schedule my training was very sporadic to say the least.

So, I set my sights on the 5K. Coachette, and coach jr both wanted to run, and so I decided the heck with myself, I'm gonna run this one with them. It's a lot bigger race than any of the 5K's they had done previously, and I wanted to make sure they were doing OK.

We lined up towards the back, and when the gun went off, made our way slowly forward to the line. coach jr. was the pace setter, as big sister is more of a sprinter, and goes too fast and then tires out.

We were passed by some people at the beginning, and passed a few more, and crossed the mile one marker at 8:40. I told the kids great job, and if we could run the rest of the way that pace, they would both set personal bests.

As we continued...no one passed us, and coach jr just kept hunting people down. coachette was following behind with me, but he was definately running a good pace. I didn't see a two mile marker but based on our pace I told the kids we had a mile to go, and they both started to accelerate a little.

With about 1/2 mile to go, coach jr had opened up about a 50 meter lead on coachette and me. He was just passing people right and left. coachette was tired and breathing very hard(as I said, she's more of a sprinter) and I kept telling her to breathe deep and relax.

She tells me, "I have to beat coach jr". And started to kick with about 200 meters to go. She caught him with 100 meters to go. coach jr, sees this and he starts to kick too, they are both passing people all the way to the finish. The announcer who is announcing finishers goes nuts when he sees these two kids passing adults. I'm running pretty darn fast trying to keep up to them. Mr. Green

In the last 5 meters coachette, edges coach jr by about 1 stride. when she finishes she is exhasted, and throws herself to the ground. coach jr is fine, grabs some water and stands around like he's not even that tired.

According to the chip times....both kids ran....

25:53!!! Nearly a 4 minute PR for coach jr, and a 3 minute PR for coachette!! We checked the results afterwards, they finished 80th and 81st overall. Pretty good for a 7 and 9 year old.

Mr. Green Proud PaPa signing off. Mr. Green

sporadic or not, I think that in 3 years, when coach jr is 10, I'm gonna have my hands full with him.

He does all this with no training, whatsoever. He just has a large aerobic capacity. 5 minutes after the race, he's running around, going crazy, asking me if there's a one mile race later (like at our hometown race).

I'm surprised they could find 80 people in South Dakota for a race.

A very nice report, and nice results. Well done to the Coach-fam! thumbs up
