Since guns are out of the question (at least for me), what do/would you use for protection around your house?

A. a dog
B. Supersoaker filled with something 'stainable' (i.e. grapejuice)
C. Tazer gun
D. baseball bat
E. your vicious wit

a and d. Although I've "borrowed" a gun before in a former residence.

You'd be surprised at how effective a deterrent a dog can be (where's our local officer to weigh in on this one...??)

F. None of the above.

I expect anyone bugularizing my home would trip over any number of the kids' toys scattered about the house, fall and break his neck.

My dogs would be great deterents if the bad guy is outside. Inside, for a milk bone, they'd carry out the items for him.

I'd never use a gun. Even as a former cop who is married to a cop, we don't keep a loaded weapon in the house. It would be really horrible to get killed with my own weapon.

I like the supersoaker idea...during the line up you could identify the grape stain on his shirt...

I do keep a riot baton next to the bed. Better to get my brains bashed in with my own baton than killed with my own gun. (somehow it makes sense to me)

starting with the obstacle course in front of the house of various riding toys, bikes, skateboards, etc. should a bruglar make it past those (or the pond in the back yard) then he must maneuver the labrynth of train tracks and locomotive engines found throughout the house.

Our best deterrent:

Owning crap nobody would want to steal. Wink Since we move a lot and things end up "missing" during our moves, we decided early on that once we retire we'll buy the good stuff. So, if we buy a $85 vcr, we won't cry too hard if it gets stolen or misplaced. (That $85 vcr lasted us ten years, though)

We now have dogs that are super friendly if they know/trust you. They have very deep barks and very huge teeth. (Strangers have walked up to us and the dogs say nothing, then other times a stranger walks by and Griff gets his fur up and a deep growl in his throat and stands between us and the "stranger")

I also keep a large knife hidden/accesible by my bed.

If they bypassed the burglar alarm, they would have to then be met by one angry homeowner who would kill or at least severely harm the bad guy with any weapon I could quickly come by. I would respond to the incident and Robin would be on the phone with the Red Cars.
The red cars are known in our area for their "treatment" of bad guys. Let's just say, if a bad guy entered my house he would be in a world of hurt and regret.

The bad guys can have all the stuff they want. Doesn't insurance cover that? If they are just out to get that stuff, hopefully they're not dumb enough to do it when someone is home. If we are home, I can yell better than Faye Ray (did I get that right, yaknow from King Kong?).

Other than that, I have nothing but my wits.

Red cars= Ridley Twp PD, where I live. They have cherry red police cars, wear leather coats and jackboots. They are a bad bunch of dudes but great cops at the same time.

We've got lots of guns. Although by the time I remembered any of the combinations to the locks the house would be emptied. Keith keeps a baseball bat handy.
