The story:
I've had the ring for a week or two now. I found a good hiding spot in the apartment and put the box there and hoped that Sandy wouldn't find it (and she looked). I spoke with her mother and the plan was to propose on the 22nd, when we're all opening presents. Her brother (and his wife) would be in from England, and i suggested that Sandy's grandmother should be there to. So, it was set, we just had to get to the day.
This past friday i got really, really, really sick while trying to watch the new Lord of the Rings movie, and the one thing i had hoped was that i would be healthy on monday. It's the big day, you know!
I was feeling mostly better on monday, but i left work early. Partly because staring at the computer was making my tummy sick, and partly (as i told Sandy) because we were opening presents that night. feel better after i got home, still a little off, but a whole lot better now that i'm not two feet away from a computer screen. We end up seeing a 3:15 showing of Bad Santa, and then go back to the apartment, gather all the presents (i slyly get the ring box into my pocket), and head to her mother's.

We have dinner. I swear i'm staring at everyone wondering who knows what. Does her brother know? What about the gma? Does Sandy know? Well, Sandy doesn't know. I think, i hope. I've been good at keeping this quiet. Shoot, my parents didn't know.
We open presents. Now i'm starting to get nervous. It's going to be soon after this. I hope that Sandy doesn't notice the bulge of the ring box in my pocket. I've done a good job not constantly grabbing, checking that it is there (which i would have done had i just put the ring in my pocket....there would have been no bulge, but more checking). Finally, all the presents are opened. Sandy gets up to get her camera.
I get up.
"Actually, there is one more present that i have to give you."
"What?"
I'd like to say that i was smooth and suave at this point, but after i pulled the box out of my pocket and opened it and dropped to my knee, she started crying and i lost all sense of the little prepared speech i was going to say. I know that i said
"I love you."
and
"Will you marry me?"
But i don't think i managed anything else. Sandy said
"Of course i will"
And all was right with the world.
