I improve myself and my looks by hard work.
Taking off over 50 lbs made a huge improvement in both my looks and my mental outlook.
I have put some back on, but it's muscle mass, not fat.
I run, weight lift, cycle and take martial arts...all for enjoyment, mental health and to keep in shape.
I look at most other guys in their 50's and shake my head in wonder...
Plastic Surgery? Na... I'll make my own improvements....
It's all about what you are willing to invest in yourself and your health...in time...sweat...and dedication.

We need to teach our children to derive their self esteem from being people of good character. We need to do our best to protect our kids from the harmful effects of rampant consumerism where the media constantly tells them they can improve their self esteem by buying products (cars, exercise equipment, cosmetics, cigarettes, alcohol, clothes, surgical procedures, mp3 players, running shoes.... ow my brain hurts).
This is a relatively new problem that has started to spiral out of control in the past 20-30 years. Kids are definately less resiliant (and advertisers have realized this and target them more and more every day) so the older generations have to learn to: first - not be affected themselves and second - mentor the next generation to be less affected by the mass media.
Sometimes my wife and I feel like we will have to join a Bedouin tribe somewhere in central Algeria when are kids are born in order to accomplish this.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I meant those ridiculous spacehips for your feet that kids wear today.
Anything by Asics, Mizuno, New Balance, etc... are clearly marketed with nothing but integrity and a desire to see runner's efficiency improved by technology.

This brings up a good point...how many of us run for the aesthetic benefits?
How is that really any different? |
Then again, I remember running for anaesthetic reasons. Nothing was ever quite so bad or so dark after a good run.

Why couldn't we all be so lucky?

I run to look good and feel better about myself.
I run to clear my head...it's my therapy of sorts.
I can't say I love it, but I have to do it.

True, but how many of us started out enjoying it in that way?

No plastic surgery here. And I wouldn't unless I was disfigured as the result of an accident.
And along those lines, this is strange. When he was a junior in high school, my dad was in a car accident, and had to have what I was told was quite a bit of plastic reconstructive surgery on his face... in his senior class photo, he still has a bandage on his left jaw. Yet people who know him tell me I look exactly like him - especially in the face.

I'm a firm believer in having plastic surgery for esteem issues. While it would have been great for me to be happy with the body I had (or didn't have, as the case may be) I wasn't. No amount of affirmations made me love a certain aspect of my body. So I changed it. And I do have scads more self-confidence, and if nothing else, my posture has improved.
And, while I could have afforded at the time to get the whole nine yards, I kept my cellulite right where it was and I'm trying to work it off the honest way. No amount of exercise though will give you firm, nice, breasts if you didn't have any to begin with. I'm just sayin.

You're right! Most of us started running either as a health modification and/or a new challenge to beat.

I've said it before but I have no worries about you as a dad or your kids! Big huge fat to every word of that
except, that I read "running" as "basketball" in front of shoes...
