I was watching this program on commercial TV the other night, where women in America for no readily apparent reason get $250,000 worth of plastic surgery performed by Top Plastic Surgeons to the Stars.
This highly educational program informed me of a problem called "hooding" where you have too much skin in your upper eyelids so it folds over slightly towards your eyelashes. This horific circumstance is tackled by an opperation where they cut a slice skin out and sew it back up. The Plastic Surgeon to the Stars informed the victim quite casually that she might find she couldn't close her eyes properly for a couple of months.
Rushing to the mirror, I was relieved to find that I do not suffer from this awful problem, however on closer inspection I did note that I do have rather chissled features and am generally devastatingly handsome.
Should I have cosmetic surgery to make my poor, ugly friends feel less worthless in my presence?
Just because I'm paronoid and generally unplesant dosen't mean I don't have feelings.

Hey, we'd all enjoy looking perfect. Fortunately, I don't have to do anything more than put on some good looking clothes to look fabulous. Eat you heart out Brad Pitt !!!

I think there's something to be said for increased self-esteem.
If you see how these people conduct themselves afterward, they don't just look different,..they have an increased confidence about them because they were so self-conscious before...
I wonder how many RiffRaffers have had some sort of plastic surgery. I'd bet it's more common than you think...

FWIW, I have not had any plastic surgery. All of this is mine.
I think those shows are just indicative of the general quick-fix society we live in. I guess I see what HH is saying, that the people become more confident after all their work, but I've also seen it backfire, where someone's partner just can't get with his partner's new mode so they split up.

at what point would someone realize "hey my family loves me more now... which means they didn't love me as much before..." and just breaks down?
it's horribly detrimental to society to air crap like that.
and to think my parents were worried about what i watch on tv when i was little - it should be the other way around. i'd be concerned about what we're seeing now

I have a number of thought on this so I'll make a rambling list...
The people on those shows are exploited for TV. Yeah, they THINK that they want all that plastic surgery, but ... <shrug>
I wonder how many people would get plastic surgery if it wasn't cost prohibitive.
I HATE that teenagers feel the need to get their nose or their boobs done. I wish their parents and society as a whole could instill self-esteem better.
I wonder how many people would get plastic surgery if there was less pain! I don't think those show convey how painful it is.
It was a shame when someone I know had their nose done and it doesn't look much different - not better, nor worse. All that money, time & pain for nothing.
If people think that just changing their looks will make life easier, they are deluded.
Has no one learned from Michael Jackson?! Repeated trips to the plastic surgeon to "fine tune" or just "one more thing done" has become popular I've heard.

I have not had any surgery, but living in Cali, I can see why people are tempted to. Many beautiful people here.
Second thought: Blue, many of us look to our closest friends and relatives for approbation. (Rather than looking to God or internally) And sometimes, without our realizing it, we are surrounded by shallow, surface level people. Even our moms and grandmoms can be very, very shallow.
One of my relatives, an elderly one feels that ALL overweight people are that way because of laziness. My mom is overweight--but not for being lazy. I remember her keeping a spotless house, raising three kids, working and finishing school--all at the same time. She never naps and is constant motion. I also have some very, very lazy skinny relatives. Therefore, this relative, whether she realizes it or not, shows her approval if you are skinny. And her disapproval if you are what she considers overweight. Her daughter, usually a size 6-8 was always "too fat".

I, for one, have not had any plastic surgery. If I weren't so selfish about my running (yes running and not wanting set backs), I'd have it in a heartbeat. I do not believe that there's anything I can do to fix my c-section scars, etc. that are left from having my children. Only I know they are there, but they still bother me. There's something to be said about being vain about every part of your body and no matter how hard you work at improving things...some things never will work without a little help. I'd do it to feel better about things and get rid of the scarring in a heartbeat. This is just me.
BTW. I've now started incorporating ab work into my workouts. Something I have not done for years due to pain and discomfort from my surgeries. I'm going to try every last thing to fine tune what I can to feel good about myself. We'll see if it really works. It's taken me years to get to this point. Stupid, I know.

This brings up a good point...how many of us run for the aesthetic benefits?
How is that really any different?
