I'm my kids' teacher, and after trying 2 different phonics programs, including the "famous" one, when they were learning to read, I finally gave up.
I think phonics is crap. The language is so full of completely ridiculously spelled words, words that it doesn't even make sense the way they're spelled (i.e.: through/phase) that phonics just isn't for me.
I worked and worked at a way to teach them that would be easy, and effective, and I finally just had them read. Whole stories. Easy at first, just a few lines of simple words, harder later, now my 7 & 9 year old are reading fluently out of books they pick.
I figured the best way to make them understand the words they were seeing and understand what they meant, would be to see them used with other words. It's worked out fantastically. They know all kinds of words from reading all kinds of text.
