Posted: 06/29/05 - 09:32 Post subject: President Bush's speech last night, poll not poll
Just curious. Did you watch? What did you think?
Apparently he made the speech as polls are showing an increasing number of Americans disapprove of the war in Iraq, more and more Americans want us to bring troops home and for the first time, polls show that a small majority of Americans (52% was the figure I saw) believe the Bush Administration intentionally deceived the public when we went to Iraq.
Polls reported in the news are strange beasts, so I thought I'd take an RF poll on those questions: What do you think of the war (did you want it when we went?)? Despite your answer in the first question, what do you think we should now? If you watched, did the President's speech change your opinions at all?

I missed the speech due to a tennis match. Read a blog elsewhere from a military type at Fort Bragg that said 60,000 folks were turned away from Bush's speech.
Polls reported in the news are a strange beast. Regardless, we are there and we need to finish the job - lest the fight will come to our own soil sometime soon.

Nothing in the speech text really shocked me too much, it was more of what we already knew for the most part. I was glad this speech had a more serious tone for once, less of the forced good ole boy accent, no applause breaks or cowboy cliches and more straight (more or less) facts. That at least helps me believe that the President believes what he's saying and isn't just trying to sell me a ketchup popsicle by being charismatic.
All that said: I didn't understand why we went to Iraq to begin with, but despite the expenses of life and money, we are there now and I think we need to stay there until Iraq can stand on its own and the insurgency hopefully lessens, otherwise I fear we do risk future attacks here. I think the President made a good point about setting a deadline. If we say we're leaving August 1st, the insurgents will move in the 2nd and Iraq will resent us for leaving them vulnerable.
One thing I question is his statement about not needing more troops. It almost seems as though more troops could only help speed up the process, squash the insurgency, seal the borders, keep things more secure for our troops and the civillians until Iraqis themselves are able to step up to the task. What am I missing here that the president is seeing?
