What's the longest amount of time you've been sidelined from running or physical activity?

Are you running now?

I wish I wasn't having back issues!!!!!

A couple of months due to knee issues. I got back out there and ended up running a marathon afterwards. It was GREAT! I've got to warn you, though...the high that you get from running may start to make you become very irritable if you aren't getting it from another exercise. I almost went into a depression (of sorts) until I realized what was going on.

It's been three years for me.

Every single time I think I'm "cured" and I try to run, I get even sicker. So, now all I can do is walk. It sure is frustrating after knowing what it feels like to run.

But, if I walk I can do more more often. If I run once, it puts me out of commission for all types of physical activity for a long time.

Edit to add: The depression Diva mentions is for real. And sometimes just walking doesn't cut it.

2002 -2003 Had a series of dumb stupid injuries that effectively killed my running programs for about a year.

Jan 2002: Get cleared to run after Arthroscopic knee surgery.

Feb 2002: Purchase a pair of New Balance shoes to train for Marathon Purchase + 1 day: Shoe gives me great pains in side of left heel as if I had placed flesh of the heel into a vise. No more running until it clears up - 2 - 3 months.

April 2002: Major major Right heel problems. Only solution: Cortisone shot into heel - man was that painful !!!

June 2002: Start running again - right knee gives me fits. Ortho guy says no big problems it was inflamed tendons in the back. This was not cleared up until after a program of Ibuprophen in August.

October 2002: Do an 8K race in Brunsick ME with Maddie. OK times but 70+ year old beats me.

November 2002: Bursitis flares up in right hip. Again, cortisone shot in hip no running for a couple of months.

January 2003 - start running again...

Dec. '05 - April '06: out w/ plantar fasciitis. I tried various other things, but couldn't do any of them pain-free. I did a couple of races as a walker and came away thoroughly depressed. Sad

I'm running, somewhat sporadically. The biggest problem right now is not being able to do the things I once did (9-10 milers on the weekend, for instance).
