yes we are to have ours on at all times. I've seen people sent home because they did not have thier badge on.
i have mine on a retractable lanyard.

My wife has to wear hers too at school at all times, she keeps her's on lanyard too. As far as my work goes we have 2 plants plus our office, the only door you can't get in is the office unless you have a key (I do) or get buzzed in, the plants and ol Joe can come and go as pleased.

I have one and I have gotten used to it being around my neck. I found a nice Purdue Lanyard that it hangs from.

This is true for me and school, except I have mine on a clip. Security won't let me in to school or the hospitals and some doors won't open without my id badge.
At my job we had them but I didn't have to wear it and never had to show it to anyone, fortunately, because it will go down in history as the worst picture taken of me ever. And this includes some very incriminating photos of me in college. The only bad thing is I had to turn it in when I quit. I wanted to burn it instead.

we are supposed to wear our school ids at all times too, but its just for our department. we had some issues with PETA and other people who oppose animal research year or two ago.
but its kind of useless. there isnt a true department area that you can be in without access with a card key or a regular key.

They are only bad when they are your pass card too and you forget it at home. this hasn't happened to me. yet.

They're bad in our school when someone forgets to wear theirs and they have to pay a dollar.
