Don't get me wrong. I always wear my seatbelt but more about that later...
National day for giving out....? Tickets? I, for one, think that it's good that a car could be stopped for no other reason than to ticket the driver who isn't buckled in. But that's not the case in the state immediately west of Pennsylvania. A stop must be for something else FIRST and then...
I don't think I'll ever understand. In the newspaper, I read reports of traffic accidents with fatalities. I always look to see whether or not the victim(s) was ejected from the vehicle. The saddest thing I've noticed this year is that, of the deaths to teenaged drivers in this area, the percentage of them who've been ejected is staggeringly high. This phenomenon has been covered by the press. If I'm not mistaken, the number one reason that teens won't buckle up is because....it's not cool. I guess that dead is way cool.
And you don't want government encroaching upon your privacy/rights by telling you to buckle up? Understandable enough. But when you're in that accident and you're injured, maybe you'll be happy with a private ambulance service. I'm sure you don't want the government, i.e., public emergency service, intruding.
Sorry... Rant Mode: OFF

WE WERE NOT GIVING OUT TICKETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just information to those drivers who did not have them on.
In PA you can only be written the ticket as a secondary violation. You cannot be stopped for not wearing your seatbelt.

Apologies to RangerG for ranting. Apparently, his post arrived while I was ranting. Had I known, I'd have saved it for that other day.
And as far as kissing lips scraped off by the pavement after the flight through the windshield, well, I drove a firetruck for a living. We responded with the life squad on those kinds of runs. And what I've seen....you don't want to hear about it before tomorrow's meal. You.just.don't.

But it's just FREAKING FINE for me to ride a motorcycle without a helmet in rush hour traffic....endorsed by the State no less....
Remember...I was a Deputy, and I was an Assistant Rescue Chief...I have seen as many bad points about seat belts...as good ones.

we were not breaking windows of people who did not have them on. If they did not roll down their windows..so be it.
It was an informational packet being given out.
We enforce stuff we get crap
We try to help people out by informing them of laws we get crap
so much for pro active community policing.

Apples and oranges, dude. Though I think the repealing of the helmet law is ludicrous, you can't compare a fly off a bike to a car crash. The first is primarily body to pavement contact, and almost always only affects the driver, whereas the second involves other materials like glass, steel, and the complete loss of control of a two ton projectile weapon which affects way more than the driver.
Remember that the initial popular (as in people, not as in the best) argument behind the helmet law repeal was that most bikers believed they would rather be dead than a vegetable. A little plastic and padding wasn't seen as a viable means to prevent either. The benefits were cloudy, whereas the benefit of a seatbelt is quite clear. I would think your chances of keeping your foot on the brake would be infinitely improved if you were strapped into your seat rather than flying through your windshield. Not to say that a motorcycle coming straight at me wouldn't cause some damage, but I would bet it would be a lot less than a car. That whole mass-acceleration ratio and whatnot.
