Why is an expired drivers' license not a valid form of identification when you're carded for age?

it is no longer current. It must be current to be valid. Liquor laws state it must be a state/governement issued valid form of i.d.

It just doesn't make sense to me though. In April of 1999 or whenever, the state issued me a license that said my birthdate was April 22, 1983. The state will never change my birthdate. When I go to renew my license, they don't ask for a birth certificate, the date on the expired license is sufficient. If you have a government issued id that includes your birthdate, it should be proof of your age no matter when it expires. I just don't see the logic behind not accepting it.

But it is no longer valid, regardless. It could be discarded and stuff. No id's are issued and thus it could be a duplicate. I am not defending the law, I agree with you about "spirit of the law"etc, regarding never changing your birthdate.

I'm not sure why really?

You had to have proof of your age when you aquired your license (birth certificate, possibly your SS#, etc.), so I don't know why an expired one would not be proof of your age. Your picture is there and all the information. That would boggle me as well. The only thing that expired license tells someone is that you cannot drive any longer in that state (legally anyway).

The only other way you can show proof I guess is to have your birth certificate or college ID. Wouldn't that work? My college ID had my SS# and birthdate on it way back in '85.

dunno

The beauty of liquor is, the more of it you consume, the older you look, and then no one bothers carding you anymore! Wink

Nope. There are only 4 forms of valid ID: drivers' license, passport, military id, or state issued id.

It annoys me when people card me, give my license back and say it is expired, then I have to give it back to them and tell them to look at the renewal sticker on the back.

Saturday night, my friend Ed was passing through Baton Rouge and we were talking about how we hadn't been to the casino yet. So we decide to go to Harrah's in New Orleans, about an hour away. Ed goes up to the entrance and they won't let him in because his license is expired since February. Ed goes through the whole deal of how he hasn't been in state, he's been stationed in Florida for the past 2 years and they don't require a current drivers' license. All you need is a home state license and military ID. And also, Louisiana says that if you've been discharged within the past 6 months, your license does not have to be renewed. Ed was dischared maybe 2 weeks ago? And this is his first time in Louisiana since. Well, they don't let him in. They say if he has a military ID, they'll accept that, but Ed says he turned it in when he was discharged. While we're talking to him, he cards some other lady who has no identification at all. She's with a group of people from Russia on vacation, and while it's pretty obvious that she is in her late 20's, they have the policy that they card under 35, and she has no ID. So the guy calls down his supervisor to make the decisions. He talks to the Russians and lets them in with no ID at all. Then the guy comes and talks to us. Ed gives him his military history, explains how the state doesn't require current license, etc. The guy says, "Nope, can't let you in. If it was expired by less than 30 days, I could do it. But not 5 months." So... what's the distinction there? It's not a "valid" id either way... why set it at 30 days?

So we ended up going to Copelands Cheesecake Bistro on St Charles and having some drinks (where they didn't even say anything about the expired license).
