92 degrees, slight breeze, low humidity. Not ideal conditions, but I'll take them. After getting fantastic directions from genie (since I tend to get lost in that area (remember I couldn't find my last 5K?) I got to the race at 5:45pm for a 7pm start. I picked up my race packet in the back of Shady Brook Elementary School complete with two T-shirts, including the race one which is indeed the coolest I've ever seen:
I then sat comfortably in the shade, periodically getting up to get some water and use some facilities. At 6:50 I start to walk to the start on the other side of the school and see a guy I went to college with who I haven't seen in over five years. Then I get closer to the start and find genie. We chat up a bit, and then I join the pack in the back for this non-chip race.
All of a sudden, the start director yells "Turn around!" So after intentionally taking a spot in the very back of the tightly packed pack, I find myself in the front row on the start line. I tried to work my way back as far as I could so as to not bogart a spot of a fastio, but could only get back as far as the fifth row.
The stench was unbelievable. Apparently more than a few people were finishing up longer runs with this 5K. I almost passed out the smell was so bad. Finally the gun went off and everyone began, pushing, prodding, groaning. Within 5 seconds I was tripped from behind, and smashed my jaw on the elbow of the guy next to me. I thankfully didn't fall, but my shoe did come really loose.
Mile 1 was pretty much downhill on a very uneven road. 7:15 into the race the winners were already coming back from the first out-and-back. I got reprimanded for saying to myself "you've got to be f--kin' kidding me" by a parent next to me. Guess I didn't say it to myself. I hit the mile marker 10:20. A lot faster than I've been going, but not as fast as I'd been. A little concerning, because in true long distance runner style, I start out slow and get faster - hopefully I won't crash later. We hit the first turnaround and uh oh - what goes down, must come up. That was pretty tough.
Mile 2 was on the second out-and-back on a very hilly residential street. I walked for a bit to hydrate (it was really hot), then trucked on. 11:15 for that split. After hitting the second and final turnaround, I ran through a sprinkler a local was kind enough to rig on their mailbox and headed uphill to home.
Mile 3 in 10:50 and I smiled: still haven't crashed. Final .1 in 0:48. Would've been about 4 seconds faster, but after passing 6 people to get to the chute, I didn't want to take out the lady smack dab in the middle of it while I went through. Four seconds were not worth a crash and possible injury.
So my first speedwork session was successful. I felt good after the race, and I'd gone hard-easier-hard like I'd planned. Not as fast as my first 3M at Broad Street, but I did shave a full 1:41 off my previous official 5K PR from last fall. Looks like The Kid is on the comeback trail.
But the best part? Meeting up with genie, gogirlgo, Mr. Go, and goette deux post race for some pints! Not a , but merely a 3 pint , but fun nonetheless!

Nice pictures!
First time I've seen a picture of you, Kid. You looked nothing like I expected. Which is a good thing. And as a bonus, you lived to tell about meeting up with Genie!

Thanks for sharing! It sounds like a great race, and more importantly, a great time with friends.

Wow, the pics came out great!!!! I love that ladies of RR one!
Way to go, PR Girl!!! You are definitely on the comeback trail! It was great to see you again and finally get to meet the Go Family, minus Goette Une, who is partying it up in Florida at the moment. Goette Deux kept us quite entertained, she is a real cutie, and Go and Mr. Go are just great people, as I suspected. Looking forward to more Posse gatherings soon!!!

Digital photos here = very good. Pix from Sunday's race from disposable camera = grainy once developed and scanned.
The Gos are definitely my kind of people. Opinionated, wicked smart, beer drinkers are always cool in my book.
Next gathering = 9 days: RFTHOI. Work on TriBob and see if he'll come!

Well, we didn't discuss politics but only because Goette Deux is bored with it already. Her take on socialized medicine alone is pretty in-depth.
We had a really good time. Apparently Kid was lost in her cups b/c she thinks I said I'd host a post Run For The Hill Of It party. What I said was, get yer ass to McMenamin's afterwards and we'll all have fun. Anybody else up for it?
