So, I'm in school now. I have to be there all day many days, and while there are places to buy lunch, I'm a poor college student, I'm brown baggin as much as possible. But its been a long time since I last did this, I have lost my creative inspiration. At my job we had a refrigerator and microwave available to us, making our options a little broader, leftovers, lean cuisine, etc. Now I can't do that.

Gimme brown bag ideas. What do you or your kids get in their lunches? Sammich ideas that are tasty and don't get soggy? help. Think cheap. Ie, I doubt I'll be getting little packs of chips, I'll probably get the jumbo size pretzels and divvy them myself, etc.

Also I like the idea of having yogurt, how do I keep it cold? I don't have one of those geeked out lunch things so A) Can I freeze it and B) if so, will thaw by lunch? or C) Do I buy one of those geeked out insulated lunch things the size of my backpack?

i used to buy juice boxes and freeze them to act like an ice pack. wrap your sammich in a paper towel and you dont get so much of a cold side and a warm side.

variations of pb and fill in the blank are always tastey, cheap, and non perishable.

isnt there some type of 'dinning hall' place that at least has a microwave? at my school we have two of these set ups, one of them even has a toaster.

Tortilla wraps are good. Get cool tortillas (they have all kinds of flavors nowadays) and fill with anything!

I've seen a cream cheese, turkey, lettuce, tomato, onion combo.

Tuna and cheese with lettuce and tomato.

Ice packs are definitely a must.

freeze your bread - it keeps your filling (cold cuts or P&J) cool and s/b defrosted by lunch time.

IF you are a mayonnaise person, my mother used to lightly coat the bread with margarine/butter to keep the mayo from making the bread soggy.

Insulated lunchbag with a reusable, freezable ice pack.

Don't get a lunch bag with individual water packets lining the bag. It won't work, they break after they freeze and soak everything when it thaws.

hot food still possible by Thermos http://www.thermos.com/thermos/cfm/prodDetail.cfm?pg=1&id=229&z=z

also i remember Thermos having a lid that you'd freeze, it was great for jello and cut fruit.

Don't let your sandwich sit right on the icepack. If you do your bread will get soggy. Mad

Also don't let your sandwich be next to your banana. There's nothing worse than a banana flavored ham sandwich.

Excellent ideas, thank you.

Turns out I think there is a microwave we can use on the third floor, but considering how many students and how little time, I'm going to try not to rely on it.

The lunch bags are fine (okay maybe a little geeky Wink ) but I don't want more to carry, my 'backpack across europe' sized bag (okay, not really) is already enough, I don't want more bags/stuff/etc to carry.

toast is a great idea, as is frozen bread....the thermos might be a better option when the heat index is maybe a little below 105, but also a good idea...

for the record, I don't know how healthy it is, but, I froze a yogurt overnight and brought it today and it was cold but thawed at lunch and tasted fine. Granted, I'm sure all the beneficial probiotic parts of yogurt were good n dead by the time I ate it but its at least an option....
