I know this is a pretty boring topic, but does anybody have any experience or tips on this?......This is at the GF's house in Dallas, which has black clay soil that shifts when the soil gets wet and then very dry in the summer....It will probably have to be totally redone eventually, but what can be done to prolong that expense?

The maintainence guys at the school where she works said to blast the cracks out with water, then put in sand, that top it off with some type of special caulk from Home Depot.....

I wouldn't blast the cracks prior to filling the cracks with mortar sand, rather than just plain sand. Wet the sand after filling the cracks (gives it better compression strength). Once the concrete on top has dried (from wetting the sand), then use the concrete crack filler over the top.

Using the sand to fill the majority of the crack saves the expense of just using the tube concrete crack filler in the entire hole, which can be done with success. You might have to reapply in a couple hours once it has seeped down into the crack.

Once you have done all of this, water seal the driveway with Thompsons applied with a pump sprayer (plastic thing about $12 at Home Depot). The sprayer provides even coverage. Two coats should be sufficient. Water sealing the driveway will help to prevent water penetration in the cracks which is essentially eroding the concrete pad and the soil base.

You will still have the shrinking/expanding problem of the soil because the soil under the concrete pad will still get wet when the soil surrounding it is saturated, but this process will buy you some time.

Hey thanks Jenn.....by blasting I meant just washing the leaves and crap out with a hose......so just get mortar sand to fill the cracks? Sounds fairly easy....

If the cracks are wide enough and deep enough for actual trash, then yes, you should clean them out, otherwise, just layer the sand on top.
