Posted: 04/07/06 - 08:10 Post subject: Parents of Driving teenagers.
Please reiterate with them that driving should be their first priority. Thier cigarettes, friends, cellphone, radio, everything but the road comes way way after that...
Well...I'm okay. But my car isn't. My sweeeet sweet 1986 Honda Civic with only 30,000 miles on it got creamed last night as the cheese in a 4 vehicle SUV sang-wich. Some teenage girl reaching for her cigarettes and drops her cellphone down by the gas pedal. Instead of waiting 10 seconds for the red light that was coming up to pick it up, she leaned to get it and took her eyes off of us. She slammed into the lady in front of her. The lady slammed into me. I tapped the person in front of me.
While I got the most damage to my car, I;m actually more concerned for the little old lady she creamed first. She was a small lady and her radio flew out of her dash board and clipped her in the head.
Can this week be over? And can we get my eyeballs to stop free-floating in my skull?

Glad you're okay MW. Sucks about your car and the little old lady though. I preach to my kid constantly about driving habits, hopefully he's hearing at least some of it.

I trust you are OK. I hope everyone is OK. Sorry your car got nailed, too.
They should take a tip from our son. When he was doing some driving here, some other yoot came flying out of a strip mall lot and totalled our car. Dave was in the clear, no problem there (other than the car).
The other kid got four citations - inattentive driving, and what not. I think he also was pre-occupied with the phone. But while the po-po were there assessing the scene, the other kid started to smoke a cigarette. Dave walks up to one of the policemen and says, "Isn't under-age smoking against the law?"
Citation # 5.

Sadly it's not only teenagers who do this. I have friends that put makeup on, send text messages, and answer calls all while driving to work!

What fires me up about this is that insurance will probably total MW's car, and even tho it was garage kept with low mileage, and looked in new condition, because of age will give her some paltry amount that will not replace it...
Yes...my buttons are pushed. God help the insurance adjustor....

You're friends w/j1?
Sorry about your car. I'm all for raising the driving age to 21.

Glad you are OK.
My kids have been cited a total of three times for using their cells while driving. It would appear that there are plenty of other people out there chatting away.
One of the main reasons we got our kids cars that would not go over 60mph or had a "limited life left".

I'm actually a good driver. Most of my accidents have happened in my own driveway. I just cannot go backwards.
I am guilty of talking on the phone, though.
But if I drop it, I don't go looking for it till I'm stopped.

I am glad that you are OK, but very sorry about your car. I had something similar happen several years ago with an older, but very, very clean car. It was totalled and I got no where near what the car's true value was. I wish you luck.
At least you are not hurt. A vehicle can be replaced; a person cannot.

Glad that everyone is ok, I know of too many stories like that that ended badly.
My uncle was in an accident a few weeks ago, we sold him my '97 Saab when I graduted from college and he was driving home and some kid in a pick up truck who had been drinking ran a stop sign and creamed him. He walked away (thanks to Saab's pre-GM safety record!), but the ignorant driving is just a huge problem that takes too many lives.
