I am looking for any advice, recommendations or warnings on baby products, specifically on car seats and strollers for newborns. Are there any features you found useful? And gimmicks I should steer clear of?
It is getting close and I am trying to get things set, but really have no clue about these things.

I can pass on any questions you have to my wife. She's a walking Consumer Reports when it comes to kids' products.

Britax IMO is the best carseat on the market, and also one of the priciest. I've only had Jacob (age 5) in this brand -- the first one was a convertible and he had it from birth to 3.5y I think, and he's now in their booster which he will have until probably age 10 or so, depending on how tall/how much he weighs at that time. Will (age 9) is in a Britax booster as well.
The brands to stay away from in ALL things are Safety First and Costco. They are basically the same company and have had many issues with their products, including death.
Your best bet is to consult the CPSC website and look at who has had what recalled: http://cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prerel.html. They have all the pertinent info (for instance, a Graco crib was recalled 12/2005 because of many injuries, and one child has died in this crib this year).
Good luck! Picking out baby stuff is very fun, but also very scary when you think of the safety issues.

Oh, and get a swing! They are sent from heaven!
Don't waste your money on a baby monitor. All they do is keep you from sleeping because you hear EVERYTHING!

I could not survive without a bouncy seat. I HATED high chairs....pain in the @ss to clean. My second kid went from feeding in a bouncy chair to a collapsable booster (went right into the dishwasher for cleaning) and transportable to the malls since many restaurants only have the booster seat without trays and seatbelt.
Keep an umbrella stroller in your trunk at ALL times. (you'll appreciate it when the kidlet is actually walking and you aren't hauling the big stroller all the time). There will be a time when they are 2 or 3 and "tired" that $10 umbrella stroller will be a backsaver.

Yes on the bouncy seat. Don't bother with a high chair. Get the booster with a tray that straps directly to the chair. Less bulky and easier to clean, plus then the kidlet can be pushed up to the table, which they enjoy more.
Excersauce is the bomb!

Despite Sue's otherwise excellent advice, I wouldn't recommend washing your kid in the dishwasher. Unless you use a gentle soap.

Get your car seat installed by the fire department, unless you are awesome at installing them. |
The bomberos My child will be in Mexico so this isn't an option.
edited to add that my child will probably be one of the 5 children in mexico that have a car seat, most are transported Brittney Spears fashion.
