Given all the messages/values our kids get via media with which we don't agree, is healthy effective parenting at this time in this country, in some respects, a counter-cultural activity?
What do you think?

In what way?
Parenting is definitely different these days, but I think parents that are involved in their kid's make more of an impact on those that don't

I think television is an excellent sbustitute for effective parenting.
Actually, this is just a test post to see if the forums are working properly.

Counter-cultural. hmm
There are so many messages available that parenting, no matter healthy or not, can be like-minded with one or two of them. If you're suggesting that effective parenting is not the norm any longer, well you may have a point.

To butcher a great Star Trek quote*...
I think the views of the many outweigh the views of the few.
The majority of people live to higher standards than that shown in the media and even more teach their children that most of what we see in the media is just plain wrong. There are two reason effective parenting is a success despite the media:
1) Parents who limit their child's exposure to "bad media"
2) Parents who care enough to explain to their child what they are seeing and/or hearing and why it's right or wrong.
*The original quote is from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: The needs of the many, out weigh the needs of the few. Capt. Spock says this to Admiral Kirk after he exposes himself to a fatal dose of radiation to save the ship from certain destruction. Vulcans do have feelings?
