Posted: 02/07/07 - 01:18 Post subject: Pain in left knee
Hello everyone, I'm brand new here.
I've been running off and on now for about 8 months now.
I'm no speed demon or long distance champ, but my usual routine was around 11 miles a week.
I basically took all of christmas off because I was sick essentially for about 3.5 weeks.
Now, I've since resumed my routine, or at least I've tried.
Two weeks ago I ran 9 miles and couldn't do another day cause my knee was in so much pain.
I took the weekend off and resumed running on tuesday of the following week to see if my knee had healed at all. I got through 6 miles (3 miles on two seperate days) and I had to basically limp the last half a mile.
So, I took about another 2 or 3 days off from running and I tried running yesterday (monday) and I didn't have to really limp in on the last stretch of the run or anything.. but the pain was still definitely there...
I'm 20 years old and I'm going to be really pissed if my knees are crapping out on me after only 9-12 miles a week.
So my question being this: Should I go see a sports doctor? Or just give it some more time? My Dad, has told me that this is completely normal of new runners to get knee problems in the first few weeks after resuming running from a break. (My Dad has been running marathons for quite some time now, so its not just Dad's good old advice or anything like that)
I agree that perhaps my knee just needs to get built back up, but it seems extremely odd to me that my knee is in such terrible pain after only 6 or 9 miles. I started up cold turkey running 12 miles a week at the beginning of fall with no problems at all.
Also, my knee not only hurts during and after the run, but currently my knee is in minor (very minor) pain from just sitting around. It gets worse when i move around or walk up flights or especially down flights of stairs.
Suggestions?
Sorry for the really long post
I'm not really sure who to ask for advice and thanks in advance!
