Posted: 08/13/06 - 11:55 Post subject: Paavo relay results
so I filled in for a relay 2-person marathon when his partner bailed. Leading up to the race my teammate is asking about course records etc. I'm a little miffed that I'm a last minute fill-in and now he has expectations about my performance. He has informed me that the record for mixed masters is 2:49:06. He recently ran a 1:23, so I know he's expecting a sub 1:26 from me on this NOT flat course.
So anyway, after a long drive to the nowheres of upper WI, he wants to drive the course. I tell him I don't like to know what I'm facing in long distances and as we are driving, I'm like "holy hills". He also tells me I can select my leg, but continually adds he likes first to get it over with. I said that it's my preference that the strong leg goes second. (which is him as he plans to run 1:22 and I said 1:24 was reaching for me).
Race day, I drop him off, he's running first, drive to the 13.1 mile and the bathrooms are locked and the RD is asking the sheriff for a key (of course sheriff's don't have keys to public restrooms). So I jogged into town and find a porto-potty. Some guy is there also and says "happens EVERY year, they never have a key".
So I'm hanging around and see first runner. 5 person relay. then I see top two guys and the infamous Chuck Engle about 20 clicks behind. I figure these guys are running 2:35ish....I see first 2 man relay.....I had warmed up with his partner. When they take off I ask his split. 1:19. So I start looking for my guy. 2 more 2 person teams go by and another 5 person team. I'm looking at my watch and we're 1:24 into it. My partner gets to me at 1:25:30 and says "run your own race". I'm thinking "well, yah, I always do".
I take it out slow knowing that if was expecting sub 2:49 after his 1:25:xx performance he's dreaming. I decided to wear my garmin for the first time in a race. I'm glad because the markings would be off due to the first mile actually being .9 miles. So I waited until my garmin clocked 2 miles before I started viewing splits. My first 5 miles were alot of hills and into a decent headwind, so my first split came up as 6:45. "come on Sue, that's slower than marathon pace". At 10k, I'm 40:00 flat and feel better, even though 39:58 was my split in my last marathon, this was hilly" I start clicking off a couple of 6:10-6:15s as I round out the hour mark and get a little nervous because everyone talked of a hill at the end and I wanted to make sure I had enough. At mile 24, I'm wondering where the heck this last hill is as I'm approaching town!!! It never came. The last 1/2 mile is almost a dangerous downhill and I have a ton left in my legs but I'm breathing like I'm under extreme distress. As I cross the line and give my chip to volunteer. I look at the clock and see 2:49:07. I knew instantly we had the record. It took me longer to realize that I had run sub 1:24 on a course that my friend had said "you can't PR at Paavo". I don't have an exact time for me as I didn't turn off my garmin until I was through the chute. I have 1:24 even for 13.14 so I figure I'm awfully close to my 1:23:32 PR.
Of course we found out later that the actual mixed masters was 3:00, the 2:49 was mixed open. My partner was all that we weren't recognized for smashing the record. I'm like it's a freaking relay, big whoop.
I got recognition in a different way. The patriarch of a great running family came up and said "Sue, dump that guy, I want you as a partner next year"
We had to wait forever for awards, but they had a post party with a band. I never laughed so hard at 2 guys dancing. Hilarious. They had cutoff skin tight shirts and drinking something out of plastic gas container. People are giving me strange looks as I'm practically rolling on the ground with laughter. "what's her problem"

Dang Sue... that's like really fast running and stuff....
Helluva job and I agree, you need to find a partner who'll uphold his end of the deal.
Btw, I remember several years ago having Chuck Engle show up at local 5k/10k race. The two were run together, two laps around the Hinckley Park trail for the 10k, one lap for the 5k. Chuck smoked everyone on the first lap enroute to winning the 10k by a ridiculous amount. So he pretty much won both races at once.

I thought I'd never see or hear of a low in sports than when I saw a Little League coach at first base smoking a cigarette and drinking a beer,
Drinking out of a plastic gas container has that beat.
I'm glad you had a good race despite all the hassles, and you kept it all in the right perspective (unlike your partner). Good for you.
