Posted: 08/24/05 - 07:23 Post subject: PUPS are driving me crazy
every time i log on, i get a McAfee warning: PUP found. Do you recognize this PUP? if not, delete it. so i delete and it keeps coming back with the warning when i log on.
i ran a virus scan and it found 13 "suspicious" files that i deleted. i thought that would solve it. it is still finding PUPS.
wth are PUPS?
who let the dogs out?
help me.

I found this info on it:
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=si_virus&message.id=42458
Have you recently installed anything?
One thing that you may not have activated, if you have McAfee version 8.0 anyway, is unwanted programs checked. If you right click on your McAfee in the task bar, select view console (or the equivalent if you have the entire suite of services) and then find your Unwanted Programs Policy and make sure you put a checkmark in each of those categories. Then run a full scan again.
I'll try to remember to ask the boys about this. Our campus uses McAfee and they might have a clue.

Last I looked, my dogs were in the yard.
But you can't trust that Rottenweiler anyways.

I click the mouse, it turns on. I click on Shut Down, it turns off. Anything else, and I'm crying for my mommy.
I am the wrong person to ask for computer help.

I did talk to my CIS guys, and it is a Potentially Unwanted Program. What you need to do is see exactly to which program it is referring, and then decide for yourself if you need that program. You can then leave the program and disregard further messages regarding it, or remove the program (you know how to do that, right? Control panel - add/remove programs) and then you should not get the message again. In theory.
And if you don't know if you need the program, do a web search or ask us.
HTH!
