Posted: 05/23/04 - 08:20 Post subject: PLEASE sign petition to fight global warming
Hi all,
Over the last several weeks in my Environmental Systems class the 11th graders and I have been studying air pollution, ozone depletion, greenhouse gases and global warming. It's really pretty amazing how much damage could possibly be done to the world's environment, agriculture and economy by as soon as 2050. Check out this petition by Sens. McCain and Lieberman and sign it.
http://www.undoit.org/
The USA, the world's largest producer of carbon dioxide (one of the worst greenhouse gases), has refused to sign the Kyoto Protocol (a global treaty to reduce greenhouse gas production) because they claim it will be damaging to the economy, and that it lets large, developing countries like India and Brazil off the hook. That may be, but it doesn't change the fact that our country is contributing more and more to possible global climatic change that could eventually have profound negative effects on the fertile farmland of Iowa. Some say that within 50 years the climatic changes could make latitudes like Iowa too warm to be as productive as they have always been, and instead shift that productivity to northern areas of Canada and Russia, which up until now have been too cold to be productive. It's also predicted that by 2050 the Everglades National Park will be ruined by rising sea water.
Please forward the info on to your friends and family.
thanks
