I know very little about golf so if someone can help, that would be great.

Okay, so, she's in Ft. Worth trying playing to get on the tour? Yes? please correct where ever I veer off course here so she has to play to a certain level this week to play later? Confused: Meanwhile some of these guys Vijay Singh seem to dislike having a woman or maybe just her on the tour?
Okay, I know she's extremely talented, and after the comments Vijay made I'd like to see her whoop up. But why is she the first woman in 45+ years to have an opportunity in the PGA? Is it by invitation only and this is the first time they felt compelled in so long? What are her chances really? I understand based on misc banter from radio djs that she's probably not nearly as good as the top guys...

They're not letting her in becuase she'll be keeping a guy out. The PGA is a guys league and the women have their own league.

Seems simple enough to me.

Okay, I can understand that, so why are they letting her play this week? Because if she makes the cut this week, she'll be in, right? And why not other ladies? Is she that head and shoulders above the rest? I follow the LPGA less than the PGA....shocker, I know....

You've lost me now. I know if I wanted to start a one-sided debate in our office, I could ask about it in the breakroom tomorrow.

PH, I think you are mixing things up a bit. She has been given a sponsorship spot to play in this weekend's tourney. She is replacing someone on tour, but it would probably be someone just in it to make the tourney money anyway.

As for Vijay's comments, I don't think they are sexist AT ALL. As he said, the men's tour is for the men, and the LPGA is for the women. Also, she really has no chance of doing very well - as much as I may sound sexist by that remark, her statistics put her way back there. Her drive distance alone put her 138th on the list.

I personally think it's an intersting idea. Nothing wrong with it. Some no name, local boy would have taken her spot anyway. But, I don't think it will prove anything, except that she is out of her league. It's sad that she is so much better than all of the other women. She is literally in a league of her own!

Edited to add: I do think that Vijay's actions are entirely wrong. To say that he won't play in the tourney if she is in his group is not right. And then he backs out saying his wife told him to? He's sad.

In a nutshell, it goes like this.

1. Tournament needs publicity
2. Director gets idea.
3. Invites top woman to play in tournament
4. Tells Espn about it.
5. You have what you have now.

That helps--thanks.

made the mistake of asking one of the guys here, got about 6 cow-workers involved and I left as one guy was really digging a hole about the whole subject.....I think they've moved on to the suffrage movement and if women should be able to drive cars or something...wow that was a can of worms...

I thought Singh pulled out because he was tired?? Yes, he was an ass about it but he just won a major tourney, correct? Who knows?

I think the big ruckus is that the men and women have ALWAYS been segregated. Remember the mess with Tiger Woods and Augusta and NOW?

Boy. I can hardly wait for Muirfield!!! Maybe there will be a brawl on the course (one can only hope...)

I don't think she truly expects to be competitive against (most) of the guys. She has proven herself at her level with out a doubt. If you want to get better, you compete against those better than you, and on course you typically don't play.

I'm sure the publicity for everyone helps too. Since she has a sponsor exemption, I don't have a problem with it. It's the sponsors to give and hers to accept if she wants it.

I'd love to see her do well, but I don't forsee it happening.

From my understanding this is an invitational, so while technically she is keeping a guy out if they limit the # of invitations- it's not like a regular PGA event which you have to qualify for and she hasn't met standards and is keeping a guy out who has.
I say let her play and fall on her ass. If she can make the cut more power to her. The PGA is not just for men, it is for the best golfers, be they men or women.
BTW, in her practice rounds on a par 5 it took her 5 strokes just to make the green. She will also be forced to use a driver on her 2nd stroke which doesn't lend to accuracy. SO even though she bulked up, she is still not UP TO PAR tee hee

It will prove one thing to Annika; how she compares to the world's best golfers (minus Tiger). And that's why she's doing it. Not to prove anything else to anyone else.

It will also prove to be a huge money maker for her sponsors and CBS.

Hopefully it will also prove to little girls that being competitive and athletic is a good thing.
