We had another Cuban boat come ashore last night at the resort's dock. The people in it are gone (well, obviously). No one knows yet how many people were on it, but they left their clothes, towels, gas cans, some food and drinks and snorkels behind in the boat. It's a small wooden boat, with a wooden and metal rudder. I'm surpised that it made the trip intact.
We know it's from Cuba and not Haiti because of some of the labels/names on things.
Wherever they went, they are safe now. Once you step on land here from Cuba, you are covered under the "wet foot, dry foot" law.

I think it's pretty neat myself, regardless of how anyone feels about immigration. If someone wants something that badly and is willing to go through all of that effort to get it....
I'm kinds glad for them too after what happened to a boat of Cubans two weeks ago. They were intercepted two miles off shore and will probably get sent back. They will likely face some jail time in Cuba.

80 miles, not 18 feet. (not at you, at the smartasses.)
However, it's been storming a LOT here lately so the water and wind are rather rough.
Edited to add it's 80 miles from Cuba to Key West, to the southernmost point. It's another 81 to where we are located in Islamorada.
They're saving the boat to use as a prop for photoshoots (whatever happened to that rolleyes smilie?).

I'm always sad when I hear of a defection gone wrong, such as in the case of that little boy, Elian? I think his name was. Or in the case of Mexican immigrants in a hot truck who die, or something like that.
Say what you want, but if the possibility of death is preferable to your current living conditions...that's a no-win anyway you look at it.

It was taken away from us for undisclosed reasons. Smarter people here can upload it or sumpin'. That leaves me out of course.

Well, I do too, in that I wish that the government extended some of the same courtesies to say Haitians, who have often have a much more difficult situation with which to contend. Rebel fighting, mudslides, tropical storms which have devastated an entire half of an island...I'd get out as well, if I was in that position. Just sayin
I've become much more aware of the unfortunate conditions some people face in some of the Third World countries located directly south of us since I have lived here. There are many more headlines about this issue than you would see, say in Columbus, OH. It's pretty sad.
I don't like the policy of paying for lifelong healthcare for Cuban refugees when we don't have a National Healthcare system for our own population. Right now, that bites me in the butt.
Interestingly enough, no one at the resort has reported it.

I'm the same way... I totally understand why they would want to come here. Heck, my family came here at one point for similar circumstances, I assume. But, I don't want to flit the bill.
Oh well, se habla?
