Posted: 10/26/02 - 16:55 Post subject: Oshkosh on the Water 5 Miler report
Okay, it wasn't exactly ON the water but damn near it! Paul/batjac came up to run the race with me on this chilly morning o' Saturday.
This was a pretty nice and organized race with some rockin tunes blasting at the start line...When the Macerena came on, paul instinctively broke into dance until I slapped him upside the head.
My strategy was to finish. It was cold out. I was wearing pants and a fleece and I had only ran like 9 miles this week so I figured the Pr-goal (breaking 39:42) was unattainable.
Well, our strategy was to keep our first couple miles in the 8:10 range...but that didn't 'stick'. Oddly enough, they lined us up with all the 2 milers, so we started out way too fast and clocked in at 7:40 on mile one. I think after mile two I left Paul cuz I knew that I had a chance to set a new PR...The course was flat and it was starting to warm up. Mile 3 took us through the park/zoo on the lake so it was nice and scenic (and no monkeys flung their poo at me). As a bonus, the sun appeared for the first time in like a week, so it made for a nice 'moment'. If I wasn't running a race at the time I would've sat myself down and wrote myself a poem.
I clocked in at mile 4 with a time of 30:45 so I was on pace!! I would run up to the person in front of me, shoot the crap and then move on...I don't know about you but I like to conversate alot during races...which was probably kinda silly to do, cuz my last mile was the longest!
So, the final stretch came, I kicked it into gear and finished with a ripe new PR of 38:17!! I shaved 1:25 seconds...somehow? No medal sadly...I was getting spoiled I guess. Finished 5th in my age group. First place went to a 20 year with a time of 30:13.
After the race, Joy and I took paul to the local microbrewery pub for some lunch and enjoyed some brews and nice conversation. Thanks for coming up Paul! We had a great time!
So I dub this year my 'Leaps and Bounds Year'. My racing is done for 2002...time to eat Whoppers and drink 40's. Thanks for listening!
joel

Joel,
You are such a stud! If you continue at this rate you'll have finished your next race before the starting gun.
Congratulations!
And of course no "Congratulations on your PR" post would be complete without a Scrolling Fubby™, so here you go:

A buck twenty-five off the old PR?!?! And you're able to hold a conversation? Very nice Joel! I get the feeling you're just beginning to crack down those PRs. Next year is gonna be huge. Go easy on dem whoppers.

I had a great time. We froze a little bit before the race and had to run it with a lot of clothes on but what a good time. I PR'd by 5 seconds, I think I went out a little fast but I am pleased with effort. Joy and Joel treated me to a very nice lunch at the local brew pub, thanks Guys!! I had a great time and can't wait for the next one where it is my turn to buy. By the way I brought up the home brew but forgot to take it out of my backpack. Joel, I have it set aside. Say the word and I will deliver. Great race amigo!

Wow, a PR! Don't you just love it when a "well, I'm just gonna run it, see what happens" race turns into a PR?
You don't have to stop racing for the season y'know. Why not visit Florida for a week or two? We race through the winter down here.

You probably could have beaten Joel if he were the one wearing the backpack.
