So, looking at that list there are several things that surprised me:
1. Johnny Depp being nominated for Pirates of the Caribbean. Sure, he did a fantastic job, but i didn't see that as the kind of performance that gets recognized at Oscar time.
2. Cold Mountain being shut out of the Best Picture category.
3. The Best Picture category. Specifically, Seabiscuit and Master and Commander. Excellent movies, but i'm still surprised.
4. Keisha Castle-Hughes for Best Actress. This is just plain cool. Whale Rider is one of the best movies of the year, and to recognize Castle-Hughes was a sweet move. She'll never win, but it is cool to nominate her.
5. City of God. So let me get this straight. The film can be nominated for Best Director, but not for Best Picture OR for Best Foreign Language film? C'mon...
