Posted: 01/21/03 - 10:21 Post subject: Orthotics here I come!
I went to a sports doc on Friday and he told me (and I already knew this) that I pronate pretty severely. He also recommended that I get some therapy for some slight muscle imbalances to correct some of the damage that I've done my running so many miles with such a pronounced pronation. He told me that if I only do one thing, it should be to get orthotics. He attributed all of my past problems to the pronation and most of my current aches and pains to it too.
I got a 2nd opinion yesterday. The Dr. that examined me and his intern both agreed that I overpronate quite a bit and told me that I definitely need to get orthotics before I screw something else up.
Both Drs. also agreed that I need to get in to some more aggressive stretching to offset the advance of my living rigor mortise. I've been doing some pretty active stretching for the last 6 months, but I guess I'm going to have to focus on that even more.
This all ties in nicely with what my podiatrist told me 6 months ago when I got a stress fracture in my 3rd metatarsal; get orthotics.
I'm going to get 'fitted' for them in the near future and hopefully, some of these recurrent pains will finally go away.

Good luck, hope they help.
I go orthotics back in 99 when I was trying to develop a running habit. Unfortunately I did it all wrong and ended up injuring myself. I went to a Podiatrist, he diagnosed PF and prescribed orthotics. I wore those orthotics faithfully, and for the most part the pain went away. I did however fail to keep running regularly this time. After a couple of years the orthotics stopped being necessary and I stopped wearing them.
This fall when I started running again I could feel the beginnings of PF pain again, so off I went to a new Podiatrist (I moved to a new state). Instead of throwing orthotics towards me right away, he taught me a couple of stretches to try and told me to get a good stability shoe. Since that day, no pain whatsoever. I'm not so pleased with my first podiatrist.
That being said, I am not overly against the use of orthotics. It seems like you've made sure it was the right decision, and gotten a second opinion as well. I'm sure they will be a great aid to you. I just tend to worry that they are over prescribed at times.
Good Luck PH!

Hope they do the trick for you PH. Few things are as frustrating as the injury/reinjury circle. Here's to problem solved and on to a good spring & summer of racing!

PH, What kind of orthodic are you getting? Rigid, semi rigid?
My orthodics have helped immensely. It took a while for me to get use to them but now I am very pleased. My doctor told me that mine are not a support but a forceful reminder to my body on what needs to be done. I did have some pretty servre shin pain (soft tissue related) in the beginning until my muscles strengthened and got use to my new biomechanics.
Good luck!

Will your insurance cover some of the expense? Mine covers like half if I ever needed to get them
