I'm pretty high on organic products, but I think an equally valid criteria should also be locally-produced. Of course, more often than not the two go together. Especially here in Eastern PA our farmland, some of the richest in the world due in part to careful Amish stewardship during the past centuries, is being paved over to make way for stripmalls and exurb communities at an alarming rate. Once that land goes, you can't get it back for agriculture.

So if you like the idea of organics, try when possible to patronize farmer's markets and stands featuring local produce, dairy, and meats. Most of what you get there is their organic or low-spray, and/or doesn't contain many of the additives and chemicals that large agri-business farms need to keep going.
