Back story:: I raced a 5K on Thanksgiving day 2005 in racing flats. I injured my right achilles tendon and took most of December and January. Was able to resume (slowly) running up to 1 hr. at a time without pain. I trained in regular running shoes with my custom orthotics that I've had for a couple of years.
This weekend (Saturday, Feb 18, 2006), I ran a 10K (not raced. 50:00 finish time - slow for me) and now that it's Monday, I can barely walk.
I ran 6 miles on the treamill Friday without a hint of pain, but doing a 10K the next day has me in some serious pain the following days, no pain during the race though.
What's up with that?

PH,
What shoes did you wear in the race? How much road training have you been doing?

I ran in the same Asics I always train in. I have been doing >90% of my training on the treadmill since Thanksgiving since I don't want to aggravate my injury and have to limp back home.
Plus, it's cold outside.

It is possible that you stride length is different when running outside, or the surface change is causing problems. Are you more cautious when running on the treadmill vs. outside?

I find that treadmill running doesn't work all of the stabilizer muscles as well as being on the road. In the spring, I really have to be careful of how much mileage I do outdoors because I'll end up with sore and tight ankles if I do too much in the first week or two.
Try getting more road work in (slowly) and see if that helps.

Me also - I ended up with a stress fracture a few years ago in the spring. I had been doing more treadmill work than usual that winter and came up with the fracture right after a race, so now I'm more careful too, and try and get outside more in the winter.
PH - I use different shoes for my TM runs than outdoor. TM runs I use a little lighter trainer than my normal shoes. Outdoors I alternate between my normal Saucony's and a trail shoe for ice and snowy conditions.
As for the cold - don't you ride outdoors all the time? I'm not a cyclist, but that sounds like it would be much colder in the winter

I'm betting that the change in surface from 'mill to pavement is causing your grief. Acclimate to the pavement before attempting any more racing and see if that helps.

I'm glad to see that others have the same issues as I do. I ran a week on the treadmill, after not running for about 1-2 months, and then ran outside. I felt like someone had pummelled my body, everything hurt.
I think you need to get the road miles in, aclimate to that. I have to agree that there is a big difference between tread and the outside miles.

Looks like I'm going to be spending some time on the pavement (not that I mind). I tried running Friday after taking 6 days off and I only made it about 3 minutes before I got more calf pain.

Try snooping at www.exrx.net and look up the achilles area. They have tonnes of spot-specific exercises, and it's really easy to navigate. When I had IT band issues, I found that doing the weights and stretches they mentioned really helped out a lot.
Other than that, I've afriad you might be back to RICE treatment....
