Posted: 02/07/03 - 10:00 Post subject: One week and counting....gulp!!
Had my surgeon's consult yesterday....whimper....no turning back now!! Last mammogram showed that the cysts have multiplied again and he is anxious to get in there and get them out. (Me too, they HURT and I am officially off ALL medication from now til the 17th, which sucks because I've had a damn headache for two days now and I'm not allowed to take anything for it because of the possible anesthesia interaction risks)
What REALLY freaked me out, is that they are sending me home from the hosp with this pain pump thing hooked up with catheters to both sides of my chest that delivers localized anesthesia (something like xylocaine) at intermittent intervals and I have to wear it for the first couple days after surgery!! The mere fact that I need this wigs me out because that means there is the potential for major pain here!!! I figured they'd just give me Percoset or something (which I am also getting). I can only wear sports bras (no VS stuff) for 6 weeks too. Activity restrictions: nothing at all for at least the first 2 weeks, only walking, ET, stationary bike after that, no swimming for at least a month, no running or upper body weight work for 6 weeks......guess I'll be gettin' my Riff Raff on for a while. I'll be out of work for two weeks (YAY) so I'll be counting on you guys and Netflix to keep me entertained.
The ladies will understand this better than the men, but I feel really weird about how much they are taking off. I know it's not the same as removing ALL of it, like when you have cancer, but it's a very strange and disturbing feeling looking down at them and thinking about how I am going to feel when they are half this size. I can't exactly explain it.

Make sure you don't post while under the influence of the Anthesia or pain medication. If you do, let me know before hand so I can capture the moment forever on digital.
Seriously, best of luck to you

Oh Genie! On one hand I am so thrilled you're getting it over with--and on the other I am sad that you are so worried and stressed. I wish I could wave my magic wand and make it all go away for you. (You deserve HAPPY!)
Perky ones are always a good thing!!!! You at least have that to look forward to, no? (I'm really not making light of the situation--just trying to make ya smile!)
We'll all be thinking about you and praying and sending you good thoughts.
Please make sure your roommate keeps us posted!!!

Sure hope everything goes well for you, G. You're a stong-willed woman and I have no doubts that you will bounce back quickly.

Genie,
It's natural to be a little freaked.
Hooray--You are gonna be all fixed up and perfect and ready to run again! This is really great news.

no looking back now -- really. seeing that there's been changes recently you should be ready to rock and roll.
that catheter thing is scary but look at it as a medical marvel that will intercept the pain( and yes, there will be some )but you will be armed and dangerous against it. i think it's probably better to treat it locally than dope your entire system with percodan. (i saw pink elephants on that stuff once).
i can only say that the antipation of this sucks enormously for you--
{{{{genie}}}}
this is a necessary step in your dream cuz, let me remind you....
.....people with no dreams have sucky lives......
on your way baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Genie, You're a runner..you go lookin' for pain. No prob
Just the few smaller procedures I've had done don't compare, but I can understand nervousness. Just leave it at the door. You've got professionals taking care of you, a determination that'll bounce you back in no time, and trust me on this one, more prayers than you realize being sent.

If what women runners say is true, then you can look at the bright side and consider it an opportunity for new and better PRs.

EL, I can always count on you to bring a humorous spin to things!
Although it would be nice to be able to blame being slow on that.
RR, you're right, of course....I'm totally NOT a shallow person and would never think of getting this done just to change my appearance, just like I'd never even consider implants if I had nada, I think that's what is weirding me out about changing them. (But that 20-year old thing sounds good.... )
Thanks, all. Your prayers and good thoughts are VERY much appreciated, trust me!
