I think I should've been mean this Saturday. In the last few hundred yards of my race, those of us who had battled for places kept right at it until the end. In an interesting change of pace, I was pickin' people off like flies.
Yet there was one woman who kept running really fast, fizzing out and walking, then repeating the process. Every time she passed me, she'd smile really big like "ha ha I passed you". Every time I passed her, slow & steady, she was very pissed. Not taking part in the friendly rivalry of our pack at all. Needless to say, she was fuming when I passed her with only 15 yards or so go to. But I felt great.
Shoot to walking back to the car. Said woman was asked how she enjoyed the race. "It was great, until that fat chick flew past me at the end." Then she turned around. And saw me, that fat chick. And she was completely mortified. Priceless, really.
After thinking of several mean things to say, I simply replied, "Yeah, I did pass you, because I could. Guess I was in better shape at the end."
Taking the high road just isn't as much fun.

She'll get used to it. I'm still trying to best "grandma shuffle".

she sounds like an all around lovely person (read bee-otch). anyone who dashes and fizzles and dashes and fizzles hasn't done their couch to 5K program.
you were way too nice in your response, but it was the only dignified, Christian thing to do. bashing her head into the sidewalk would have left a mark, i'm sure.

That's incredibly friggin rude on her part. You definitely showed class and restraint (and hopefully she'll learn from your example). Congrats on your race!

You are a much better person than I. I hope you're from a small racing community and will continue to kick her every race from here on out. I'm consistently beat by a 74 yr old woman, but at least she's very sweet about it.

And you don't want to put any unecessary wear and tear on your running shoes.
Tell her next time you speak with your feet.

ya know, I don't mind being beat honestly, but I hate it when you've got a loser playing games with you. I ran a race last year and this teenager did the same kind of thing to me. the last half mile of the race he would surge pass, then slow down, I'd pass him, and he'd do it all over again. I think it was his first race. anyway, he got a kick to make it into the chute before me and I was fine with that, first race for him and all, but then the payoff: I had to wait for him to finish puking before they could get the tag off of his bib, and then mine!

It's too bad that there's bad seeds no matter where you go (even at a race? *gasp!*)
Kudos to you for not kicking her nose off. Someone with a mentality like that sucks monkeys and is probably unhappy and bitter most of the time anyway, elkid.

You definately took the high road which was very kind.
I, on the other hand, would have told her to kiss my big fat arse!
