Posted: 08/11/06 - 07:24 Post subject: On a serious note - IDs on the road
Local story about unidentifiable jogger. Its a shame it took two days to ID the person. As an aside, why he didn't go run in the State Park is beyond me.
Well worth paying the $ 12 - $ 15 for a "Road ID" of some sort. One fellow at work carries his driver's license and $ 20.00. I have a Road ID on my shoe and carry a cell phone and some $$ in my little bike bag.
Dead jogger's identity eluded police
Pedestrian struck, killed by vehicle was in town for business meeting

MALTA -- An out-of-town engineer took no identification with him Tuesday when he went for a run, complicating investigations after he was struck and killed by a vehicle on Route 9.
Two days after a driver was charged in the fatality, police were able to identify the victim as 44-year-old Adam Lawas of Canandaigua, Ontario County.
Lawas was in Saratoga Springs for a meeting at Ball Container Corp. Tuesday. After his meeting wrapped up, Lawas called his wife, Christine, at home with their three young children in Canandaigua, Ontario County.

Road ID doesn't mean anything.
Let me rephrase that. This guy could have had that and the appropriate ID on him (which I always understood to mean driver's license and health insurance card) when he was hit. The people who hit him, if they were ne'er-do-wells, could have taken all that from him before taking off.

Its more likely you'd get hit by a hit and run or someone would stop to help after you did get hit. The situation you describe is very rare. Its more likely there would be witnesses or the driver would stop. Whatever you want to bring with you its better to have something on you than absolutely nothing like this guy did.

I have that same Road ID, so unless my shoe goes flying (and if the police saw me with one shoe, hopefully they would look for the other), I'll be identified. There's no way to protect against every eventuality, but at least I'll be identified in the most likely incidents.

I have one for my shoe and one for my wrist. The minute I get hit, my shoe and arm will never be seen again.

I do need to get it though, especially with fall coming and running in the dark!!

I have a roadid that attaches to my shoe but I dont move it every day as I rotate through all my shoes though.
I think I read over in the other place that someone recommened using either the wrist or necklasce since Police and EMT are trained to look for medic alert bracelets.
