Posted: 05/10/06 - 17:10 Post subject: Ok guys im having problems and i need help.
Ok here goes. I am having some problems and i really need all your help. I have some runners here and at work but they haven't really been able to answer my questions. I started running last october. At first i was 6'2 225 and i really couldn't run that far. Maybe couple blocks. I started out running and then walking a little bit then running. I went through major shin spints at first which i dealt with. Then i went through runners knee which i think im got through. I only ran maybe once every week/1.5 weeks after it got cold. It was extremly hard for me to run in the cold at first. Starting in Jan/Feb i started running a lot more and really got my distance up. I would run 3 times a week. Two short runs on the week days (4.2 miles) and long run on the weekends and i got all the way up to 8.5 miles. Granted these weren't record breaking speeds. I would run when it was cold out in 30-45 degree weather with just a shorts and a tee shirt on and i loved it. It really wasn't to cold for me.
When the weather started to get warmer i started to have problems. My muscles wouldn't tire out but it felt like i couldn't breath. I mean it wasn't hot maybe upper 70s is the warmest ive ran in but i felt like i was going to die and i couldn't breath. I took a week off thinking this would help me and it really seemed to hurt me more than help. I had a hard time running a 5k when i used to be able to run 8.5 miles at one point. It made no freakn sense to me. Should 70 degree weather be that much harder to run in? It has got better since then and im back up to 4.2 but no where near where i use to be
Second problem and this is just as important as my last problem if not more. I am always sore. I can only run 2-3(at most) a week cause im sore every day. First day after running in kind of sore and the second day WOW i am limping all day and everyone notices it. I mean i have enough experience should i really still be getting sore? Most of my soarness seems to be in my quads. I have in better shape then i was. I am now 6'2 193 (15% body fat that was measured at golds). I have good running shoes i learned you can't be caught with bad running shoes my first two weeks of running (MAJOR SPLINTS) and i run with mitsuno Moation Control shoes ( i think the wave inspired 2 if i remember correctly). I learned early on not to run on concrete which i originally was and 80% of my run is asphalt and 20% concrete. I am running 4.2m. If i take 600-800mg of advil it seems to help a little but it doesn't eliminate the soarness and i hate to have to be dependent on advil. I got to admit im bad on stretching but when i did try to stretch it really didn't seem to help things out that much. Can anyone please help i don't really know what else to try.
thanks,
ncage

hell there
You mention what shoes you wear, when you bought them did you get professional advice that these were the right shoe for you? Sometimes people can run on the inside or outside of their feet and so therefore need different support in different areas.
In my personal (which is not professional ) opinion you should not be this sore after running. Pain at that level is an indication of a problem. But apart from that I cannot actually think what could be the problem, as you say you started running gradually to let your body get used to it and you try not to run on too much concrete. Maybe someone can take this further for you?

upper 70s is fairly warm for running -- feels like 90 if you are running in it. the temp could be making a difference in your ability to breathe, but if you are noticably "wheezing" and have shortness or breath all the time, you may want to consider exercise induced asthma as a possibility. not sure exactly how they'd test for that but alot of runners deal with it. i really think it's probably just the warmer temp; it takes a while to adjust to running in the heat. it can break a run in my opinion, it is very draining for me.
not sure if the "soreness" you speak of is a lactic acid soreness or a repetitive strain kinda soreness. the lactic burn is a good sore, as if you overworked your triceps in the gym (that kinda burn). if you are still feeling that, your run is too strenuous on some level...too long or too fast, too long a stride, too much sprinting...cut back on something. try massaging the soon-to-be sore spots after your run and see if it doesn't help alleviate some of the soreness the next day....massage can literally push the lactic acid from the muscle which prevents a build up which should make you less sore. try the massage and then a gentle stretch after a run, no matter how easy the run is.
if it's repetitive strain, there are already knots and spasms in those muscles resulting from the overload. you'll need massage here too, but to kinda relax those spasms so the muscle can work properly. a repetitive strain soreness is different than the good old lactic burn.
but, i agree, you shouldn't really be feeling this much pain so regularly.

First off, I agree with RR, check with a doc that it's not exercise induced asthma.
Second, I used to feel like my body could go forever, but my lungs couldn't keep up--I started adding biking on my off days. (stationary bike). It really helped my breathing and it worked different muscles, making me feel stronger for running. Something to consider!
Congrats on your running--you are battling through the problems which is what kills desire in lots of people.
Good luck!!

Alternating between running and cycling is a great idea - increases your fitness and helps build on your lungs' ability to process oxgen.
running in 70 degrees is not nice - especially if its humid. I'm a bit of a winter trainer myself. I have no problem running in -15 but as soon as it hits 70 I slow right down.
