Posted: 05/28/05 - 15:55 Post subject: Ogden 20K Classic Wheeling WV
Short: 1 hour 59 minutes 04 seconds.
Long: I woke to pouring rain and 53 degrees. Told the husband to go back to bed, no reason both of us being miserable. Drove the hour over to Wheeling and found the coffee shop across from WesBanco Arena open-yes! Breakfast! Coffee and choclate smeared doughnut. Not my normal pre-race breakfast, but nothing else available.
The rain doesn't let up, in fact it's harder at race time. I have my Cleveland Indians poncho on. It keeps me partly dry til race time and then it becomes the hindrance I thought it would be. I ditch it at the first water station to a little volunteer girl who doesn't have a rain poncho on.
I also took heed of Obi-Wan Phar Lap's advice and put petroleum jelly all over my toes.
Splits:
8.33 A funny little round the block here. Saw Bill Rodgers warming up for his 5K.
8.54 Running through closed industrial area.
9.09 More industrial area. Wondering when the mile hill begins.
9.26 The hill starts here somewhere. I start counting people that I pass, and subtract people who pass me. I stop counting when I hit negatives.
12.07 The rest of the hill. It's at least 1.something up. Kind of a gradual hill. Not a bad pace, but I felt I should have done better. Altitude from Garmin says 745 feet to 1105 feet. I've done more in training.
10.04 The rest of hill and then it starts downhill.
8.29 All downhill. It keeps going and going and going..
9.04 Levels off, have to remember how to run again. Bummer.
9.17 We end up several miles on a bike trail, nice asphalt. I really don't like it for some reason. It was boring. Of course, it was good that it was overcast and raining-this could have been really hot on a normal day.
9.54 I get into a pretty good pace running on the bike trail here. But about halfway through the mile, I lose it. My hamstring has been bothering me since the mile hill, and my breathing is getting all whacked out. So I slow way down. I remember I have some jelly beans in my pocket and eat a few. I gradually pick it back up again. I was really glad I didn't allow this one bad moment to wreck the race for me.
9.31 I think this hits that I have one mile to go. I also see I have about 15 minutes to finish under 2 hours, so I still want to run under 10 minutes to keep that margin.
I keep glancing at my Garmin, it’s ticking off 11.6, 11.7…where is the finish line?
Note to self: figure out exact mileage next time. I thought this was 12 miles flat.
20 K= 12.4 miles.
I have to run up a tiny short little hill which is annoying. My Garmin beeps 12 miles and I quite annoyed not to see any finish line in sight yet. I finally crest this little hill, and see it’s a downhill finish, about 8 blocks or so? I’m still annoyed I am not done and now afraid I won’t hit under 2 hours. So I kick it in for this last 0.2 miles…
And finally finish at 1 hour 59 minutes 04 seconds!!! (At 12.4 miles!!)
I’m pretty happy with the results. I had predicted a 2 hour 10 minute finish, but was hoping to go sub two. My 11 mile training runs had been resulting in just at two hours.
I don't know any other standings yet about finishes.
The hamstring was really sore after driving home. I have spent most of the afternoon on the couch icing it down, I hope it’s just a bit sore, there’s a 10K race next Sunday.
Would I run this again? I don't know. This was not the "real" Ogden course due to road construction, I missed out on two significant hills.
It's kind of a boring course. Water stations and volunteers were excellent and it seemed like there was alot of them, especially in the second half of the race.

Nice report and cool distance. I might have to try that distance if I can ever find one locally.
