I'd just like a thread that keeps people updated on the off season. I've had a problem following things lately. I know some of you would keep updates going here.
Right gman? mega?
Thanks!

Randy Johnson is a Yankee
Pedro Martinez is a Met
The Boston Red Sox stole my shortstop Edgar Renteria.
Clement signed with someone other than the Cubs... I can't remember who it was.

Braves got a new closer from Milwaukee (Kolb), moved John Smoltz back into the starting rotation, and traded for All-Star Tim Hudson from the A's. We just need to get a decent outfielder to replace JD Drew, who just signed for $55 mil (5 years) with the Dodgers.

Did Smoltz want this position? I guess everyone wants to be a starting pitcher???
Wow.

I think that deal fell thru. He remains a D-Back.

Yes, very much so. He and the Braves share the opinion that his surgically repaired arm will withstand less wear and tear if he starts every 5th game (compared with trying to serve as the team closer).

I guess we may not know until the New Year...
| Quote: | Don't count on a resolution to Randy Johnson's status with the Diamondbacks before the New Year.
Despite a desire on the part of the Diamondbacks and Johnson to have something done by Dec. 31, the collapse of the three-team mega trade Tuesday makes that unlikely.

I thought it was determined he had definitely used them. He allegedly did not know they were steroids.

Jason Varitek...4 years for $40 million.
| Quote: | BOSTON -- As Christmas nears, the Red Sox are looking to give their fans a holiday gift. The club will announce a four-year contract with stalwart catcher Jason Varitek on Friday, a move that takes the invaluable switch-hitter off the free agent market.
The club called an 11 a.m. ET news conference at Fenway Park to discuss the deal.
New York Newsday reported Thursday afternoon that Varitek and the Red Sox have agreed to terms on a four-year, $40 million contract.
A baseball official confirmed to MLB.com that the deal between the Red Sox and Varitek was all but done, but wouldn't comment on the terms of the contract.
The Associated Press reported the Boston catcher will receive a $4 million signing bonus paid over four years and annual salaries of $9 million. The AP also said Varitek and the Red Sox reached a compromise over his desire for a no-trade clause, working out a solution that will cover a large part of the contract but not all of it.

Finally, loyalty properly rewarded. It's pretty obvious he really wanted to stay in Boston, and it was more about that than chasing the highest dollar (although I'm sure they gave him plenty of them too). Class act, that Varitek!
GO SOX!

4/40 is absurd unless Varitek's decline curve is a straight line - They'll be paying $10 million for a 36 year old catcher unless it's a frontloaded deal ? Rehgardless - them's some pricey intangibles
And Clement signed with Boston. Pavano signed with the Yankees as well as Akern's 2nd baseman (Tony Womack)(a bad signing IMO)
Lieber signed with the Phillies - JD Drew went to LA and Seatle was the winner in the Beltre sweepstakes and Baltimore pitcher Sidney Ponson may not make it out of his native Aruba in time for spring training.
