I hate the BMI calculation!!!

I know I'm fat but I have never considered myself obese! But, thanks to the wonderful BMI calculation I am 0.7 points beyond overweight into the obese category. Evil or Very Mad

BMI takes into consideration NOTHING but your height and weight. I have a lot of muscle mass. I know people at my same height and weight and almost every time I have thought to myself: "I don't look near as fat as they are." I have even seen people who say they weight 15-20 lbs less than me and they still look bigger than me.

What I'm trying to say is that this BMI thing is a bunch of crap! Evil or Very Mad

Yeah, I know...I'm a little sensitive...and yeah, I'm going to do something about it!

BMI is just one measurement of your overall health...so I think you shouldn't rely just solely on BMI to judge how healthy you are. Try get you body fat % measured (by calipers or some other means)...

I have never really relied on the BMI as a measure of fitness. As timruns said, a BF calculation is more accurate and reliable

I don't want to even look at that test. I'd probably lean towards the obesity side of things. I weigh more than I look. I have a lot of muscle mass and am bigger boned. I get depressed when I have anything done like that.

Don't let it get you down. Ignore it.
I was obese for quite a long time and I didn't need no BMI calculator to tell me that, but I just ignored it until I couldn't walk up a hill out of breath.
I'm still in the "overweight" category.

Let's see, you're training for a marathon, you practice tae kwon do several times a week...I'd say you're physically fit!

The BMI is BS.

As you point out, it gives you no credit for having muscle mass, just assigns you a numerical value based on a height-to-weight ratio.

But, yeah, it annoys me too. I've got people telling me not to lose any more weight, while the BMI still puts me in the "overweight" category.

IIRC, the BMI has Shaq within spitting distance of the "obese" category, and I don't think he's too worried about it. Wink

That goes for body builders as well. The BMI doesn't take into account muscle mass.

They need to come up with a better number, or make some adjustments to it.
