Well, I'm not sure if this was directed at me. Doesn't matter.
I haven't advocated taking anything away from anybody. I just mentioned the fact that we've been told that Social Security has problems. Maybe that's due to management. Beats me. I'm not concerned with it. I paid into the system but I won't be taking any out.
And I do realize that moms contribute to society (and so do dads) and that many of the things that they do are intangible. But how do you begin to pay them for the intangibles? What claim can they make on the Social Security Administration?
Hey, I'm just playing devil's advocate here. I just wonder how the SSA will survive by paying out more than it takes in.

I guess you can't pay for intangibles at all.
But: we do house criminals. Give them food, shelter, clothing. Some even get an education while in prison.
We offer rehabs that are run by tax dollars. We fund all sorts of things for people who contribute nothing to society and only take.
Sahm/d are only contributing by making sure the next generations are brought up and cared for properly.
So, I don't know.

Some parents do a fantastic job. The SSA would go bankrupt if all stay-at-home parents were worthy! Unfortunately, all of them aren't. You're not paid for your worth. So much more the shame.

Don't forget cable television! And...some of them actually get paid while incarcerated. Man, what a deal! Sure, the view isn't always so nice and it's not exactly a frat/sorority house but I understand your point. Fortunately, there are some jails in some states which charge prisoners. Kind of makes "paying for your crime" actually mean something.

But it's getting better. At least, around here it's getting better. I can't remember the last time a "mental health" levy passed in this city. The voters keep saying, "No, we don't want to fund a home for drug abusers." Or something like that. Of couse, this doesn't help solve the problem. But they're not getting more money to expand services.

I'm sure that you're doing a good job but...you know, there are plenty of them out there who aren't doing such a good job. How are we going to keep them from getting money? The ironic thing? They'll probably get more because they've done such poor job of raising their kids. They need it more than you. You deserve it, they get it.

You and I both agree the system is screwy. What kills me the most is watching people who are incarcerated get their advanced degrees when I can't afford one for myself. Now, I love that they are spending their time improving themselves, but many times it's my tax dollars doing it.
The whole system frustrates me more than not. I would rather have no dependence on the system at all.

But you've got to admit, just getting a degree while in the joint isn't a guarantee for success...
"Oh, I see here that you've got your Bachelor's Degree. Great. Where was it awarded?"
"Well, I began my studies at Ft. Leavenworth Community College and then moved on to Soledad State University. It's good. You can contact Warden, I mean, Dean Gardner. He'll vouch for me. I was a model, er, student."

No, but the fact that they get to study on my dime when I can't...
But, I do like that they get to study. I far prefer that to cable tv and empty hours to plan their next crime when they get out.
The people who most impress me are the lifers who choose to spend their time studying while knowing full well they will never get to use it. For some reason individuals like that get some of my admiration.
(Apparently learning for knowledge's sake is one of my favorite things)
