This is a heath related topic.

I respectfully disagree with my doctor.

When I train hard and drop the extra pounds my cycle goes haywire, spotting all the time.

Doc says eat more, train less and that progesterone is the answer. NOT!

One other option is the pill (low dose) but he says it might or might not work.

I say go on the pill.

Anyone else have or had this problem? You can pm me if you don't want to post here, thanks

Is the spotting a real problem? I have completely screwed up my cycle in the last year & a half with very low weight 4 times... I spot some and have a very heavy cycle and then sometimes for a few months at a time I don't have one at all.

I just deal. I didn't like the alternatives, either. I refuse to go on the pill because I don't like the side-effects (weight gain, weepiness, ups-n-downs). So I just deal.

But if you don't mind or are not as effected by the results of taking the pill, then by all means, go on it. Low dose and all.

Sorry if I didn't help much.

Interesting that he would say to eat more....sounds like there might be more here than you're saying??? What's your diet like? Is the hard training really for training's sake or more for weight loss?

I know many docs prescribe the pill to regulate your cycle, and if hormones are the only reason it's screwed up then that is probably a solid fix....HOWEVER it sounds like there's a little more here tha just hormones. I personally don't like the pill, was on it for years to combat ovarian cysts, but like Laurie said, it's well known that the pill can cause depression, partly because it lowers your B-vitamin levels, which also saps your energy, and partly from the adjustments in hormone levels. Obviously if you have issues with weight/ED's, taking the pill and gaining weight from it will only exacerbate your problems.

PM me if you want to talk more.....

I'll spill the beans some more here because someone else might be going through it too.

I don't have an ED. I am 5'5" and 118 lbs, not that thin. I am training for a marathon in Dec. and my long runs are 18+ miles and I run about 10-15 miles during the week.

I went to the doc and he is overweight. When he said to eat more I laughed. He put me on progesterone and now I bleed constantly (2 days) it isn't even my time of the month! He gave me 10 of the pills and said if it doesn't work go on the pill and try that. If I don't eat more when I am on the pill how can it make me gain weight? Does it just make women hungry?

I am more at ease now that I know this stuff is not uncommon. I was just hoping to have my cake and eat it too. (be thin, run, and be regular)

BTW: This happened the last time my weight was down when I was training hard.

Thanks for the responses!

The pill causes a woman to retain water, and it seems to mess up the hormones (I've been reading lately the part hormones play in weight gain/loss).

Just try to up your cals a little, and don't mess yourself up further right now by taking progesterone or the pill... your body's dealing with enough trying to keep its systems straight. Eat a little more, get plenty of rest, make sure you take a nice women's daily (GNC for Women is terrific), and rest when you're overdoing it.

See how that works.

Thank you for the advice, I just wish I could follow it.
Eating more is not an option and I have made the decision that neither is the pill. I guess being a woman does have its down side sometimes. I will just deal but at least I know I'm normal Cool

But why are you so adamant that eating more is not an option? How much are you eating now? And how hard are you training?

genie,

eating:
To make a long story short... I have been chubby, not fat all my life and I finally got a handle on it and do not wish to be chubby again so I eat enough to maintain what I feel is a comfortable weight.

training:
I am only running 4 days a week, short 2 to 6 miles during the week and long 18+ on the weekends to train for a Dec. marathon. I do upperbody weights at the gym 1 or 2 times a week.

revelation:
I have recently lost 10 pounds (quickly) so I think I figured out that my body thought something weird was going on. You and laurie and a few others helped my see that health is important not numbers. I just did it too fast.

I just want to know if a woman still ovulates even if she isn't mentrating. This just started to happen to me, missing periods, and, frankly, I'm worried. I want more children eventually. I want to be on a normal cycle again.

My diet is healthy (I'm very conscientious of preparing good food for my whole family) and I think I'm getting enough calories, so what generally causes this? Does anybody know?

Take care,

Shelly

The way my doc explained it and if I understood correctly the answer is no, there is no ovulation- but that isn't always the case. Maybe you could see your doc and get the right info.

this may sound odd, but doesn't a cycle slowdown really affect your bone health as well. i would really be careful if your periods stop -- it will interfere with your calcium production or for some reason cause your bones to thin faster than they should. (Stress fractures become a real issue).

i would check with your doctor(s) about the bone thinning issue as well as the cycle mess-ups. i think they are connected.
