Look, my friend. I have TRIED to get DSL down here. I lament that I purchased a laptop with the wireless card. I had dreams, golden visions of lying in a hammock, connected so effortlessly wirelessly webbed to the Internet.
Those were broken like a a crystal champagne glass on a tiled floor.
I called, when we first moved here. I was polite. I inquired ever so nicely
" How much per month is your wireless service?"
The person with whom I spoke laughes. She LAUGHED at me. Then she explained that there was no wireless service available in my area. I was shocked, because one of my projects in my former life was to obtain wirless acces for some of the executives in our area. I went through Sprint. I succeeded. I got a gold star (and several free lunches).
Still hopeful, I called Bellsouth and asked about DSL Service. They came, they saw, and they rejected the wiring. To this day, I have neighbors with DSL access. I live in a POS concrete "Conch" house - translated means tiny Sh$thole. The house dated back from the 1950's, at least. Wee have a crazy landlady who won't fix anything. When you turn on the clothes dryer (located in a concrete laundry shed, which used to have palm rats, that we killed, so now we are FELONS ) the A/C stops functioning unless you turn off the ceiling fans and the overhead lighting. If you trun on the microwave and stove at the same time, they both stop working but the gas still runs through the jets, unlit. Not good. So, please, please don't tease me. I am capable of setting up both computers on a little wireless network and would be pleased to have some sort of project that requires thought.
All I have to say about this stupid dial-up is that it is the only thing that works in a hurricane on a lap-top with a 7 hour battery.
BTW, my husband has my old laptop. SInce you're teasing me about my service, you must get it away from him, not me. He loves it. I have a new laptop convert and a new Toshiba M55-S135, with tons of memory and speed, and an electric blue cover, with matching bag. It's available for about $800 after rebates. It's a quick, beautiful, chock full of memory machine. I would highly recommend that over the WinBook.

All I have to say about this stupid dial-up is that it is the only thing that works in a hurricane on a lap-top with a 7 hour battery. The cordless phones don't work. The cells do. However, with no TV and candlelight, I can at least see what is happening via the Internet. If I had dial-up or wireless, I could not.
I LOVE it. If you want a quality and affordable laptop, this is the way to go. I can't keep from saying nice things about it, it's that good.

Because evidently PH has installed some kind of code that measures the importance of the post and the integrity of the poster so that it makes the decision that some things are important enough to hear 3 times.

I love you.
You are very kind.

How are you feeling, BTW? Car accidents are ass.
I had the same sort of issue once, with an old, reliable vehicle. It got trashed. I got nothing. (Read my little Woodie thread).
BTW, PM me. I'd love to hear from you. I have excess cell minutes, and I hurt. I would like to hear from a funny OFT wall person. In fact, I need it.
I am sore, but still conscious. I wish you guys would come and visit before we leave.
PM me if you are up for it. Or just call my cell. If I can't get to it immediately, leave your # and I will call you.
I do not like storms.

No, I am really not doing that!
I don't care about that sort of thing. I just like to talk to nice people with similar interest, and my connection is slow, so every so often I hit it two or three times.
It annoys me, but I like the people here.
