My checking/savings accounts in Columbus (which were linked for overdraft) were supposed to have been closed in November. I can't find the confirm fax since like a jackass I presumed "confirmed" meant done.

Something or someone had been having fun with my debit card until December 20, after which point the thing got shut down (did they leave it open that long becuase they presumed I'd make good on nearly $2,000 in overdrafts?)

The mail from the bank (all 9 pounds of it) came here today in a stack. I'm trying to get this fixed but they are not being really cooperative, and they apparently can screw up my credit or make me pay it because the mail didn't arrive on time). There were also two late Visa bills in it about which called and paid via phone.

Don't deal with just anyone, go for management. The working stiffs are not usually mentally equipped to deal with anything that falls under the category of "special circumstances" so you're better off asking for a supervisor or manager. Are you calling the local branch there or home office?

I'm dealing now with their collections department. Since the closeout I did apparently did not go through, the bank charged it off and sent it on. Meanwhile, they can take five business days to get back, by which point I can have really screwed up credit and/or they can try to seize my account down here, according to their service rep.

I used to work for a bank. That experience does not give me any confidence at all in their processes.

a charge-off is NOT a good thing, as you know. it is a huge X on your rating. they accidentally charged off your account?

what the heck is with banks and closing accounts anymore? it should be a simple process with the customer being the "driver". why do they make it so impossible and then something like this happens. it's a matter of one hand not knowing what the other is doing in bankland.

i would get to the VP of retail lending Kristin. ask to speak to her and then if that fails, write her a letter, spell it out. even get a copy of your now XXX'd out credit report. lame-ness rules behind the scenes in most banks. i found collections to be a real tarpit.

Thanks for the advice!
They charged it off because I didn't respond (I didn't know about it because I didn't get the mail statements from them until today or get to my on-line statements because I didn't get reliable internet service here until last month, after which point they had stopped sending me on-line statements). I'm just frustrated. For god's sake, they can pull up my account history. For the nearly 8 ish years I was with them I never bounced a check or did anything screwy. Mad

Where's Joe? Sounds like it's all a fraud issue. Someone stole your debit card number. Regardless of whether the account was suppose to be closed, you didn't make the charges, so you can dispute them, no? With all the recent identity protection policies put in, do you have anything on how your bank is suppose to handle it? I'd go at it from a fraud standpoint versus an account that should have been closed.

It's just impossible to get to someone; you call the bank's corporate office and they transfer you to their collections facility, which is an entity separate from the bank. (A/R factoring, is my guess?)

Columbus PD.. seriously. If no one at the bank will talk to you, maybe they'll talk to someone with a badge.

Have you considered that perhaps it was a bank employee? When you order online you need the date of expiration of the card, which, if you don't have the card or statement information, you wouldn't know. (I don't think my statements list my debit card date of expiration anyhow--just the card and the original paperwork it came with)

It's worth a try. I didn't know the police got involved in those issues. I think Larry might know someone too (his restaurant in Columbus was literally around the corner from police headquarters).

It's just frustrating. I'm starting to get a very limited view of identity fraud and the hassles.

Edited to say I don't know if you can hack in somehow and get the expiration date, but the employee issue is certainly a possibility. We had a teller (when I worked at a bank, way back in the day) who wired money from the safety deposit boxes fund (no lie, I don't know how she did this) directly to her Visa account. I wish I was joking, but I am not.

Aughhhh!!!! I just don't want my credit totally messed up!

I finally got to speak with someone who actually listened to me, reviewed my account history, and is willing to help me with this mess. I've got to file a police report (which should be fun, since I don't know HOW someone got the numbers; I'm sure that they will love me). But at least they're not going to freeze my accounts down here, which is what some biatchy girl told me yesterday. I'd say I was stupid to believe her but prior banking experience tells me otherwise.

Anyway, thanks for the advice. I've never had anything like this happen and it's a wee bit bizarre.
