WaucondaFest 5K, Wauconda IL

There isn't a lot to say on this one. This race was decided on in the last day or so as the race I originally planned on was cancelled. Seems there were not a lot of races in the Chicagoland area, so "there are a lot of the area's good runners here today." Perfect. Throw in a blistered toe and bad humidity and all the ingredients were there for a train wreck.

This course is easily the toughest 5K I've done. 45* turns, rolling hills, and winding streets. Especially lots of that middle one. I've done 10Ks and even a couple halfs with fewer hills. The humidity started to bother me early on (the blister was heavily taped, and never affected me), but it seemed to bother many of the runners. In an unusual development by the half-way point I was in a group of about ten runners. We all had pretty much passed everyone we were going to, and the same applied to other runs with our group. Until the last quarter-mile, it was a pack mentality.

Considering I'd only run one 5K race since September, I'm happy with the result. Watch time :25:29.26; clock time :25:32.40. Splits of 8:20, 8:08, and 8:18 - would have liked to switch those last two around. Placings - 52nd overall, 38th for men, 6th in AG. All of those are in the top half - I don't get that too often - and any top ten finish in any category is a bonus. Bad enough to get better, good enough to be encouraged by it.
