Posted: 02/28/03 - 15:13 Post subject: Nostalgia from my childhood: Wacky Packages
Anyone remember these?
They were a far-out variation of baseball cards. They were trading cards that spoofed existing commercial products. They were marketed to the 10-14 year age group. There's a technical word associated with such common products: "environmental print". i e - everyone knows what a box of "Wheaties" breakfast cereal looks like? We see it our everyday environments: either on TV or at our own breakfast tables - and as a specimen of "environmental print" we even know what the font style is for a box of "Wheaties," what the color pallete is, and we're familiar with those little extra details such as the manufacturer/distributor (General Mills) and the "Net Weight" in the lower right hand corner. And of, course, we all knew the logo itself: "the breakfast of champions" the cereal that winning athletes ate.
Well . . . how about a comical satire of that same cereal box? And instead of calling it "Wheaties" calling it "Weakies" for loser athletes. classic wacky packages.....
I really liked these crazy things. They seemed to be the brainchild of Mad Magazine meets Laugh-In meets Monty Python. A lot of the enjoyment for me was the utter detail of each satirical package. The cigarette satires were esecially funny. Such was my brilliant introductory lesson in the fine art of satire!
These began distribution in 1973 (according to their web site) and ceased in 1976. They were resurrected in 1979 and have continued to this day ...although i haven't seen them in years

Holy guacamole did I just have a flashback!!! I had tons of these and my mother threw them out when she cleaned out the attic.
As I recall, they were actually card/stickers, but I never peeled them off, and just kept them as cards.
Where do they sell these things now?

they came with gum - that horrible stuff that was covered in some sort of talcum-powder-like dust and lost its flavor instantly.

RIGHT. Some were cardboard, some were stickers, and there was a fat, flat piece of gum. I loved those things.

OMG, I remember these!! We had the stickers all over our book covers in school--you just weren't cool unless you had them. As I recall, some of them were pretty gross.....
