Let me get this straight.
Someone impersonates a military officer, forging an official military document that states the current US President committed a court-martialable (sp?) offense. Then someone, presumably from the John Kerry campaign, passes these same documents to CBS News. CBS News & Dan Rather then distributes/reports the documents as valid even though two different experts warned about them about being forgeries.
I'm no lawyer, but this has to violate countless laws. How many people and/or organizations are involved here? What am I missing?

The head of CBS News was asked about all this, and while he had an explanation, it was not very convincing. And he sounded none too confident when he was making it.

IMHO, A poor decision, to go with the story.
Makes me distrust network news even more.

I have not yet heard who the source of the documents is. The documents have been proven to be forgeries (I think; the woman who would have typed them says she didn't). That CBS and Dan Rather are finished is also questionable, but they are definitely in hot water up to their necks.
I also heard a report, but cannot confirm as I do not have access to the WSJ, that an editorial states that CBS (and I think the NY Times) are pretty much finished and that liberal media bias is coming to a much needed end.
I do think CBS has totally bungled the situation. They should just admit they were bamboozled and hasty and try to rectify the situation. Their explanation that while the documents may be false but the information contained within is not, is hokey at best. They blew it. Big time. Their credibility as a news reporting agency is trashed at the moment.

Is anyone else bothered by the fact that every political scandal gets the suffix of "gate" added to it? Watergate was the name of a hotel...

Yeah, a little annoying. But this isn't a political scandal. Well, it was supposed to be one, but it went south on the messengers. It's a media scandal. A lot more interesting really, because we see the media as a branch of our government that is critical for checks and balances.

Are you saying that I won? Are you stating that Runner X won the 2002 Riff Raff Yahoo FFL Superbowl? That the 1-7 Runner XFLs fought back and found a way to grab victory from the hands of defeat and win it all? That you, megawill, scorch, Sandy Cheeks, shelfie, omega lambda, jrjo, and runswithscissors were unable to prevent the team managed by Runner X from becoming the league champion?
Good point.
ps - you won by starting players with only 2 vowels in their last name OR if their names ended in a vowel or "er".

I would like to quote form that epitome of American Journalism Murray Weiss late of the NY Post as quoted in Esquire:
"I didn't have to be sure she was telling the truth. I only had to be sure she said it."
CBS can say this fellow supplied them with the documents, he felt they were originals. They bought off on that. (Honest mistake, Sorry !!) "We had the documents examined and the preponderance of evidence pointed to their genuiness"

Sonny if this were the other way around, the press would be demanding the truth. Interesting how things change.
