We apparently didn't learn our lesson then either. You can't force American values, good or bad, down other people's throats.

The Japanese seem to have done okay since WWII. A lot of the changes in their government was a direct result of American intervention

The GOP forged the documents, planted them with the left, and somehow got them in CBS News' hands. Then despite the fact that multiple expert witness doubted the credability of the documents (and their actual content), the GOP got Dan Rather to go on the air with them?
Wow. I'm speechless. |
That sounds about right to me. Glad to see you finally seeing things my way. |
Was there one or two shooters on the grassy knoll in Dallas?

Triangulation of fire. That's the key. That's the key.

EXCLUSIVE STATEMENT FROM DAN RATHER (Mon Sep 20 2004 11:58:02 ET)
| Quote: | Last week, amid increasing questions about the authenticity of documents used in support of a 60 MINUTES WEDNESDAY story about President Bush's time in the Texas Air National Guard, CBS News vowed to re-examine the documents in question—and their source—vigorously. And we promised that we would let the American public know what this examination turned up, whatever the outcome.
Now, after extensive additional interviews, I no longer have the confidence in these documents that would allow us to continue vouching for them journalistically. I find we have been misled on the key question of how our source for the documents came into possession of these papers. That, combined with some of the questions that have been raised in public and in the press, leads me to a point where—if I knew then what I know now—I would not have gone ahead with the story as it was aired, and I certainly would not have used the documents in question.
But we did use the documents. We made a mistake in judgment, and for that I am sorry. It was an error that was made, however, in good faith and in the spirit of trying to carry on a CBS News tradition of investigative reporting without fear or favoritism.
Please know that nothing is more important to us than people's trust in our ability and our commitment to report fairly and truthfully. |
11 days after the story went public on 60 Minutes and stating that he "never been more confident of a story in my life,".... Rather finally fesses up about "his mistake."
No apology to President Bush.
No admission as to the source of the documents.
No admission as to how the documents ended up in CBS' hands in the first place.
No discussion as to why the ignored their own witnesses testimony about the credability of the documents to move forward with the story.
Amazing. The arrogance of Big Media continues to astound me. Me thinks that multiple lawsuits are on the horizon. A short sell in CBS/Viacom stock would be in order.
Resume Riff Raff programming.

CBS apologized for the error. Bush, the conservatives and anyone else offended can take that as an apology.
I don't see they owe Bush an explicit apology. There is no evidence that what the documents contained was not in itself factually correct.

Excuse me? Still on the 'Fake but Accurate' claim? Dan Rather & CBS use forged military documents in blantant attempt to influence the upcoming election and disparge a sitting US President. And they did it all "without fear or favoritism" Right. And I've got some ocean-front propery for sale in Tucker.
The saddest part of the whole equation is that they didn't really apologize for the error. Just dumbfounded that they got caught by a bunch of Internet geeks.
The National Enquirer has more credibility now than CBS News.

Where's all their apologies to all of us for all the crap they don't report, or don't report in full, or decide we don't want to hear about, or decide we want to hear endlessly about? The media in this country have rolled over on their responsibility as a check and balance of the executive, legislative and judicial branches so what do you expect?

Maybe Rather should apologize when Bush does.

If CBS owes the President an apology for reporting inaccurate information, then what does Bush owe the American (and Iraqi) people? At least thousands of people didn't die when Rather got his facts wrong.
